SoftBank has completed the final $10 billion tranche of its planned $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI. This closes one of the largest AI investments announced this year. The Japanese technology conglomerate completed the transaction on October 1 through SoftBank Vision Fund 2. With the latest investment, SoftBank said its cumulative investment in OpenAI has reached $64.6 billion. As a result, it now has an ownership interest of approximately 13%. The MIT Transit Lab is developing an artificial intelligence platform for public transportation after receiving $2.1 million from Google.org. The project, known as the Public Transit Intelligence Hub (PTIQ), aims to bring together data from different transit systems. McDonald’s is bringing artificial intelligence into one of the most sensitive parts of the fast-food business: how much customers pay. Chinese AI developer Moonshot AI is reviewing the safety of its Kimi models after security researchers said they managed to bypass built-in safeguards and prompt the systems to discuss biological weapons and assassination scenarios. AI security company Mindgard discovered the vulnerabilities while testing Kimi K2.6 and K3 Swarm, according to reporting from the BBC. Anthropic is making an enormous bet on the infrastructure behind Claude. The artificial intelligence company has lined up hundreds of billions of dollars in future cloud, computing and equipment obligations. Many of those commitments cannot simply be switched off if demand changes.
