From Classroom Management to AI Teaching Assistants: Edmodo Nominated for World AI Awards

Edmodo has been nominated for the World AI Awards in the Classroom Management category, recognising a name that has played a long-running role in digital learning, teacher-student communication and technology-assisted classroom organisation.

Edmodo originally emerged as a private digital environment where teachers could bring everyday classroom tasks into one place. Assignments, quizzes, educational resources, announcements and class discussions could all move online without turning the classroom into an open social network.

That basic problem sounds less dramatic than many AI use cases. It is not. Teachers spend substantial time organising materials, tracking student work, communicating with classes and trying to understand where individual learners need help.

Edmodo’s evolution under parent company NetDragon has pushed that classroom-management idea further, with Edmodo Classroom combining digital teaching tools, educational resources, assessment capabilities and AI-assisted features.

Classroom management was the starting point

Long before generative AI entered education, Edmodo was built around a practical question: how could teachers manage digital interaction with students without relying on consumer social networks?

The platform provided private classroom communities where educators could distribute assignments, share learning materials, administer quizzes, publish notifications and communicate with students.

That model helped Edmodo gain significant international reach. In 2012, TechCrunch reported that the platform had reached seven million users across 80,000 schools. A year later, its registered user base had grown beyond 18 million as Edmodo expanded into educational applications.

NetDragon acquired Edmodo in 2018 in a deal valued at $137.5 million, bringing the platform into a broader portfolio of education technologies.

The underlying classroom-management problem remained familiar: give teachers a controlled digital environment where learning activities, communication and resources can be organised without requiring a collection of disconnected tools.

AI moves into the teacher’s workflow

The more interesting shift came when artificial intelligence started entering that workflow.

In 2018, Edmodo partnered with IBM Watson Education on tools intended to help educators identify learning gaps and provide more individualised support. NetDragon later described its “Edmodo Classroom – AI Teaching Assistant” as part of its early AI-plus-education strategy.

Current NetDragon materials describe Edmodo Classroom’s AI Assistant as capable of recording students’ learning journeys, generating tailored learning plans and providing interactive question-and-answer support.

That changes the role of classroom-management software.

Instead of simply storing assignments or distributing resources, AI-assisted systems can potentially help teachers interpret what is happening inside the classroom: which learners are struggling, what material might be useful next and where additional attention could be required.

The teacher still matters. In fact, that is the point. The practical opportunity is not removing educators from classrooms but reducing some of the repetitive organisational and analytical work surrounding teaching.

Edmodo Classroom reaches millions of teachers

NetDragon continues to report substantial usage for Edmodo Classroom.

In 2024, the company said the software had reached more than 9.7 million teachers and 35.76 million installations. It also reported making more than 770,000 teaching resources available through the platform, including lesson plans, courseware and micro-courses. Those figures are company-reported and relate specifically to Edmodo Classroom rather than necessarily representing active users of the original Edmodo social-learning service.

Edmodo Classroom has also appeared inside larger digital-education deployments.

NetDragon says its education technology footprint spans more than 190 countries and regions. Its wider portfolio includes interactive classroom displays, virtual laboratories, teaching software and smart-classroom infrastructure alongside Edmodo-branded products.

That broader environment matters for classroom management. A teacher may now be working across physical displays, student devices, online resources, assessments and AI tools during a single lesson. Bringing those pieces together is becoming as important as adding another individual feature.

Classroom AI faces a practical test

Education is becoming crowded with AI products promising personalised learning, automated content and smarter assessment.

Classroom management provides a tougher test.

The technology has to fit into the everyday reality of teachers managing lessons, students, resources and limited time. Useful AI needs to reduce friction rather than create another dashboard demanding attention.

Edmodo’s history gives its nomination an interesting context. The platform began with relatively straightforward digital classroom organisation. Its later development under NetDragon shows how that same category is expanding toward AI-assisted teaching and more personalised learning support.

Graham Cooke, President of the World AI Awards, said:

“Edmodo’s nomination in the Classroom Management category highlights an important side of artificial intelligence in education: helping teachers manage the growing amount of information, content and individual learning needs they encounter every day.

“Classroom technology is most useful when it supports the relationship between educators and students rather than getting in the way of it. Edmodo’s development from digital classroom management toward AI-assisted teaching shows the opportunity for these systems to give educators more practical support. We congratulate the Edmodo team on its World AI Awards nomination.”

The World AI Awards recognises organisations, individuals, products and technologies contributing to the development and application of artificial intelligence across industries.

Education is an increasingly significant part of that landscape. AI is entering lesson preparation, assessment, tutoring, content creation and classroom administration, but its value ultimately depends on whether those technologies solve real problems for educators and learners.

Edmodo’s nomination in Classroom Management brings attention to that practical layer of education technology: the systems teachers use to organise learning before AI’s more ambitious promises can make a meaningful difference.
