Google is rolling out new Search features designed to help users find trusted websites, original reporting, and firsthand perspectives more easily inside AI-powered search results.

The update brings Preferred Sources into AI Overviews and AI Mode, while also adding new content carousels and expanded “Highly Cited” labels for influential articles. Google says the changes are meant to make original, useful, and high-quality content more visible as more people rely on AI-generated search experiences.

Preferred Sources Come to AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google’s Preferred Sources feature lets users choose websites they want to see more often in Search. The company is now extending that feature into its AI-powered search experiences.

This means that when users have already selected favorite websites, links from those sources can appear more clearly inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says these links will be labeled so users can easily identify content from the publishers, websites, or creators they trust.

According to Google, any website that publishes fresh content can be selected as a Preferred Source. The company also says users have already selected more than 345,000 unique sources, and that people are twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source.

New Carousels Will Highlight Timely Articles

Google is also introducing a new carousel format for some searches about developing topics. These carousels will appear alongside AI-generated context and will feature links to timely articles from across the web.

The goal is to give users a quick overview of a topic while still making it easier to explore original reporting, updates, and different perspectives directly from publishers. Google says Preferred Sources may also be highlighted in these carousels.

This is an important move for publishers and content creators, especially as AI summaries continue changing how people interact with search results. Instead of only showing AI-generated answers, Google appears to be adding more visible pathways back to source websites.

Google Will Surface More Firsthand Perspectives

Google says it will soon expand these carousels beyond news articles. The feature may also appear in searches related to forums, social media posts, and online discussions. Users could see more firsthand insights and community opinions in AI Search.

This update may help users discover real-world reactions and creator perspectives more easily. It could also make AI Search results feel more balanced. Instead of only showing AI-generated summaries, Google may highlight links to creators, communities, and public discussions.

“Highly Cited” Labels Expand in Search

Google is also expanding its “Highly Cited” badge to more article links in Search results.

The label is designed to help users identify articles that have been widely referenced by other stories. Google says this can make it easier to find original reporting or influential coverage that other publishers are citing.

The company will also show when an article references a Highly Cited source, helping users better understand how information flows between original reporting and follow-up coverage.

Why This Matters for Publishers and Creators

Google’s latest AI Search update comes at a critical moment for the web. As AI-generated summaries become more prominent, many publishers and creators are concerned about whether users will still click through to original content.

By adding Preferred Sources, link carousels, firsthand perspectives, and Highly Cited labels, Google is signaling that source visibility remains an important part of AI Search.

For website owners, this update may create new opportunities to build loyal audiences. Encouraging readers to add a site as a Preferred Source could help trusted publishers stand out more clearly in AI-powered search results.

What This Means for AI Search

The update shows Google’s effort to balance AI-generated answers with the open web. AI Overviews and AI Mode offer quick summaries. However, Google’s latest features also make original sources easier to find and visit.

For users, this means greater control over the sources shown in AI Search. For publishers, original reporting and regular updates may become even more valuable. Building strong audience trust could also play a bigger role.

AI continues to reshape online search. Google’s latest changes suggest discovery will depend on more than AI summaries. It will also depend on the sources AI helps users discover.
