From Gemini to AI-Powered Science: Google AI Nominated for 2026 World AI Awards

Google AI has been nominated for the 2026 World AI Awards, recognising its work across generative AI, multimodal models, scientific discovery, robotics and AI products used by consumers, developers and businesses.

The nomination arrives at a point when Google’s AI strategy has moved well beyond the chatbot. Gemini now sits across a growing collection of Google products and developer tools, while Google DeepMind is pushing the same underlying research into robotics, biology, weather forecasting and scientific discovery.

This is where Google AI becomes difficult to describe as one product. It is closer to an ecosystem.

The World AI Awards recognises organisations, individuals, products and technologies contributing to the development and real-world application of artificial intelligence across industries.

For Google, the practical question is increasingly what happens when the same family of AI technologies moves between Search, enterprise software, scientific laboratories and machines operating in the physical world.

Gemini moves beyond the chatbot

Gemini remains at the centre of Google’s AI strategy, but its reach now stretches considerably further than a standalone conversational assistant.

Google offers Gemini through its consumer-facing Gemini app while also making its models available to developers through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. Businesses can access Gemini Enterprise and tools for building and governing AI agents. Gemini capabilities have also been integrated across products including Search, Workspace, Chrome, Maps and Photos.

That distribution gives Google something relatively unusual in the AI market: a route from frontier-model research directly into products already used for search, productivity, navigation, software development and content creation.

Google pushed that strategy further at I/O 2026. The company introduced Gemini Omni and Gemini 3.5, while expanding agentic experiences across Search and the Gemini app. Google described Gemini 3.5 Flash as a model combining advanced intelligence with the ability to take action, reflecting a broader industry shift from AI that generates answers toward systems capable of carrying out multi-step tasks.

Google takes Gemini into the physical world

Some of Google’s more ambitious AI work is happening away from computer screens.

Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics research extends multimodal AI into machines capable of interacting with physical environments. Its vision-language-action models translate visual information and natural-language instructions into motor commands, giving robots a way to connect perception and reasoning with physical movement.

In July 2026, DeepMind introduced Gemini Robotics 2, designed to expand those capabilities to whole-body control, advanced dexterity and cooperation between multiple robots.

Demonstrations include robots manipulating delicate objects, tying knots and coordinating different robotic systems on shared tasks. DeepMind also says the model can be adapted across different robot embodiments rather than being limited to one specific machine.

The distinction matters. These capabilities represent active research and development in physical AI; they should not be interpreted as evidence that general-purpose Gemini-powered robots are already operating at mass commercial scale.

AI becomes a tool for scientific discovery

Google’s AI work also reaches into problems that look very different from consumer productivity.

AlphaFold remains one of the clearest examples. Google DeepMind says the protein-structure prediction technology is now used by more than three million researchers, giving scientists another tool for investigating areas including disease and biological research.

That scientific portfolio has expanded.

Google’s current research includes AlphaGenome, which is designed to help researchers understand how DNA variants affect gene regulation, and the WeatherNext family of AI weather models. In September 2026, Google highlighted both AlphaGenome Atlas and WeatherNext 3 among its latest research developments.

Then there is Co-Scientist.

Built with Gemini, the multi-agent research system is designed to generate, debate and refine scientific hypotheses rather than simply summarise existing papers. Google DeepMind published research on the system in Nature in May 2026, positioning it as a collaborative tool for researchers working through increasingly large and complex bodies of scientific information.

It is an interesting change in direction. AI is no longer being asked only to retrieve scientific knowledge. Google is experimenting with systems intended to participate in parts of the research process itself.

One AI ecosystem, very different applications

The scale of Google’s AI activity becomes clearer when these projects are viewed together.

Gemini handles language, images and other multimodal inputs. Developers can build applications through Google AI Studio and the Gemini API. Businesses can deploy enterprise tools and agents. DeepMind researchers are adapting related technology for robotics and scientific problems.

Google is also studying how people actually use these systems. Its 2026 ATLAS research dataset was built from 15 million de-identified human-AI interactions across the Gemini app, AI Mode and Gemini API, spanning more than 150 countries, 140 languages, 800 occupations and 4,000 tasks.

That breadth makes Google AI relevant far beyond the conventional software category. Its technology increasingly touches search, work, coding, research, healthcare-related science, weather modelling and robotics.

Not every experiment will become a mainstream product. Some may remain research projects. But the boundary between Google’s AI laboratory and its everyday products is becoming noticeably thinner.

Graham Cooke, President of the World AI Awards, said:

“Google AI’s nomination reflects the extraordinary range of environments in which artificial intelligence is now being developed and applied.

“From Gemini and AI-powered productivity tools to robotics and scientific discovery, Google’s work highlights the opportunity for AI to help people work with information, investigate difficult research questions and interact with technology in entirely new ways. We congratulate the Google AI team on its 2026 World AI Awards nomination and look forward to following the next stage of its work.”

Google AI joins organisations, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology developers being recognised through the 2026 World AI Awards.

The programme recognises organisations, individuals and technologies contributing to the development and application of artificial intelligence across industries.

Google’s nomination also captures something happening across AI more broadly. The technology is spreading outward. A model developed for sophisticated reasoning can become a developer platform, a research assistant or part of a robotic system. Research that begins inside a laboratory can eventually appear inside products used by millions of people.

Google AI sits directly at that intersection.
