From Autonomous Black Hawks to AI in Orbit: Lockheed Martin Nominated for 2026 World AI Awards

Lockheed Martin has been nominated for the 2026 World AI Awards in the Aerospace category, recognising the aerospace and defence company’s work applying artificial intelligence, machine learning and autonomous technologies across aircraft, space systems and military operations.

The nomination comes as AI moves deeper into aerospace systems where software must work alongside sensors, aircraft, satellites and human operators. Lockheed Martin’s efforts range from autonomous helicopter flight and predictive aircraft maintenance to AI-assisted analysis of large volumes of space and defence sensor data.

The World AI Awards recognises organisations, individuals, products and technologies contributing to the development and real-world application of artificial intelligence across industries.

For Lockheed Martin, AI is part of a wider digital strategy spanning its Aeronautics, Rotary and Mission Systems, Missiles and Fire Control, and Space businesses. The company has also built an internal AI Factory designed to give its engineers access to common computing, data, software and machine-learning operations infrastructure for developing AI applications at scale.

Autonomous Black Hawks take flight

One of the clearest examples of Lockheed Martin’s work in autonomy comes from Sikorsky and its MATRIX autonomy system.

In 2026, two MATRIX-equipped Black Hawk helicopters completed a side-by-side fully autonomous flight as part of work involving Sikorsky, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the U.S. Army.

MATRIX combines fly-by-wire flight controls with autonomous software and sensor inputs, allowing an aircraft to perform flight tasks while reducing the amount of direct control required from a human operator. Lockheed Martin describes the technology as applicable to missions where reducing crew exposure or workload could be valuable, including logistics and operations in hazardous environments.

The company is extending the technology into the S-70UAS U-Hawk, an uncrewed aircraft based on the Black Hawk platform. Lockheed Martin says MATRIX uses AI-enabled sensor streams to build a real-time understanding of the mission environment, allowing operators to concentrate on mission objectives rather than continuous manual flight control.

These programmes represent autonomous aviation development and demonstrations; they should not be interpreted as evidence that conventional Black Hawk fleets now routinely operate without pilots.

Machine learning targets C-130J maintenance

AI is also being applied to a very different aerospace problem: predicting when aircraft components may require attention.

Lockheed Martin and SAS Industries developed HercFusion, a machine-learning tool suite for the C-130J Super Hercules fleet.

According to Lockheed Martin, HercFusion draws on data accumulated across almost three million C-130J flight hours to predict when components may need replacement. The aim is to give maintenance teams better information about emerging problems before they disrupt aircraft availability.

Rather than replacing maintainers, the system provides machine-learning results intended to help them make maintenance decisions. Lockheed Martin says the approach is designed to improve aircraft availability and mission capability while reducing costs over time.

That distinction matters. Predictive maintenance is one of aerospace AI’s more practical applications because it turns historical and operational aircraft data into information that engineers can use before a component reaches the point of failure.

Artificial intelligence moves into space operations

Lockheed Martin is also expanding AI and machine learning beyond aircraft.

The company reported in April 2026 that it had more than 80 space projects and programmes using AI or machine learning. Applications include multi-domain sensor fusion, predictive monitoring for system problems and rapid analysis of large volumes of sensor data.

The objective is partly to address information overload. Satellites, missile-warning systems and other space-based sensors can produce enormous quantities of data, creating situations where operators need to identify relevant information quickly rather than manually processing every input.

Lockheed Martin describes AI primarily as a decision-support technology in these environments, helping people process data and develop situational awareness while retaining human involvement in consequential decisions.

The company’s work shows how aerospace AI can take several forms at once: autonomy that changes how aircraft are operated, machine learning that supports maintenance, and analytical systems designed to help operators make sense of increasingly complex sensor networks.

Graham Cooke, President of the World AI Awards, said:

“Lockheed Martin’s nomination highlights how artificial intelligence is moving into some of aerospace’s most technically demanding environments.

“From autonomous flight and predictive maintenance to the analysis of complex space and sensor data, its work demonstrates the opportunity for AI to support operators, engineers and mission teams while tackling problems that extend well beyond conventional software applications. We congratulate Lockheed Martin on its 2026 World AI Awards nomination and look forward to following the continued development of these technologies.”

Lockheed Martin joins organisations, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology developers being recognised through the 2026 World AI Awards.

The programme highlights organisations, individuals and technologies contributing to the development and application of artificial intelligence across industries, including sectors where AI increasingly interacts with physical machines, critical infrastructure and specialised operational environments.

Lockheed Martin’s work provides a clear example of that transition. Some technologies, such as predictive maintenance tools, already work with operational aircraft data. Others, including increasingly autonomous aviation systems, continue to progress through testing and demonstration. In space, AI and machine learning are being integrated across dozens of company projects as engineers investigate how machines can process growing volumes of information without removing people from critical decisions.
