Direct Travel Pushes Avenir Deeper Into AI-Powered Corporate Travel

Direct Travel is giving its Avenir business travel platform a significant upgrade, and AI is moving much closer to the center of the product.

The company announced the latest evolution of Avenir on August 6, positioning it as more than another corporate booking platform. The bigger idea is to pull travel data, reporting, servicing, analytics and outside technology into a single environment instead of leaving travel managers bouncing between disconnected systems.

That alone is useful. The more interesting part is what Direct Travel plans to build on top of it.

Avenir is increasingly being designed around natural-language interaction, automated workflows and specialized AI agents capable of handling pieces of the corporate travel process.

Ask Avenir Turns Travel Data Into a Conversation

One of the standout additions is Ask Avenir.

Rather than digging through static reports or manually assembling spreadsheets, travel managers can ask questions using natural language and receive answers based on data inside their travel program.

That could mean asking about spending patterns, booking behavior or other program activity without first knowing which report to open or how to build it.

Direct Travel says Avenir combines this conversational interface with dashboards, trend analysis, proactive insights and recommendations. The company describes the underlying data environment as secure and governed, an important detail when AI tools are being pointed at enterprise travel and spending information.

It’s a fairly simple shift on the surface: type a question instead of constructing a report.

Behind that change is something much larger. Enterprise software is steadily moving away from forcing users to learn where information lives. AI increasingly becomes the layer that goes and finds it.

Corporate travel appears to be heading in the same direction.

Spotnana’s Multi-Agent AI System Sits Underneath Avenir

Avenir runs on cloud-based infrastructure from travel technology company Spotnana, and that relationship matters more now that Spotnana has introduced its own multi-agent AI architecture.

The architecture doesn’t depend on one giant AI assistant trying to handle everything.

Instead, Spotnana uses specialized AI agents for individual tasks, with an orchestration layer coordinating which agent should act and when. Those agents connect to specific platform APIs and structured workflows.

That design is especially relevant in travel.

A chatbot hallucinating a restaurant recommendation is annoying. An AI system inventing a refund amount, fare rule or corporate travel policy is another matter entirely.

Spotnana says its agents execute governed operations using structured travel data rather than being allowed to invent those details. Financial transactions also require user confirmation.

Direct Travel plans to expose capabilities from this architecture through Avenir as Spotnana introduces additional AI experiences for travelers, travel managers and travel advisors.

AI Agents Are Already Moving Into Travel Servicing

    Some of this isn’t theoretical.

Spotnana has already introduced AI capabilities aimed at repetitive travel-agent work.

Its servicing agent can handle tasks involving airline schedule changes, unticketed segments, refunds and other routine workflows. Another agent can pull externally booked trips into the Spotnana platform, while an AI copilot can suggest responses and summarize conversations for human travel agents.

This is where the story gets more interesting than “travel company adds chatbot.”

Travel management contains an enormous amount of repetitive operational work. Changes, cancellations, validation, reporting and record reconciliation happen constantly.

Those tasks are exactly the sort of structured processes agentic AI systems are being built to attack.

Direct Travel says it intends to use this automation while keeping human advisors focused on complex disruptions, strategic guidance and situations where personalized support matters more.

One Platform Instead of Another Stack of AI Tools

There’s another part of the Avenir strategy that could matter just as much as the AI itself.

Direct Travel doesn’t want companies bolting a different application onto every travel problem.

Avenir’s open architecture is being positioned as a central layer where customers can access analytics, automation, meetings and events technology, expense tools, duty-of-care services and specialized AI systems without replacing the platform underneath them.

The latest release also introduces Juno for guest travel, connecting trips made by guests with an organization’s managed travel activity. Direct Travel argues that bringing those records together gives companies a more complete view of overall travel behavior and spending.

That sounds less glamorous than autonomous AI agents.

It may be just as important.

AI becomes considerably less useful when the information it needs is scattered across regional systems, outside bookings and isolated spreadsheets.

Corporate Travel Has a Data Problem Before It Has an AI Problem

The travel industry has been talking about AI everywhere lately, but fragmented infrastructure remains an awkward obstacle.

A multinational company might have different booking tools, regional providers, servicing systems and datasets operating in different markets. Direct Travel’s broader Avenir rollout has been aimed at replacing that patchwork with a single global platform and service model.

The AI strategy sits on top of that consolidation.

And that’s probably the more meaningful way to read this announcement.

Direct Travel isn’t simply adding generative AI features to an old travel platform. It’s trying to create a common data and workflow layer where AI can actually take useful actions.

There are already signs of what that could look like. Spotnana’s architecture allows multiple specialized agents to work through established APIs and workflows, while Avenir gives Direct Travel a single place to deliver those capabilities to corporate customers.

The next question isn’t whether corporate travel platforms will have AI.

    They clearly will.

The question is how much authority companies will eventually be comfortable giving those agents.

Finding a report is one thing. Suggesting a cheaper travel policy is another. Automatically resolving a disrupted booking starts getting much closer to actual operational control.

    That’s where this gets interesting.
