AI Startups Help Travelers Recover Savings as US Airlines Expand AI-Powered Ticket Pricing

Airlines are getting smarter about ticket pricing, but travelers are starting to fight back with artificial intelligence of their own.

As US airlines increasingly experiment with AI-powered pricing systems, startups including JetBack, Junova and Refare are helping passengers recover money when flight prices drop after booking. These services monitor ticket prices, identify cheaper fares and help customers claim refunds or travel credits without having to constantly check airline websites.

According to a Reuters report published on October 30, 2026, the technology is creating new opportunities for travelers who previously had little control over airfare fluctuations. While airlines use sophisticated systems to maximize revenue, AI startups are developing tools that could make those pricing changes work in consumers’ favor.

How AI Is Changing Airline Ticket Pricing

Airlines have relied on dynamic pricing for decades, adjusting ticket costs based on demand, seat availability, competition and booking trends. Artificial intelligence is making these systems more sophisticated, allowing carriers to analyze market conditions and respond to pricing changes with greater speed. US airlines are already using AI to monitor competitors’ fares while exploring additional applications for revenue optimization and flight operations.

The growing use of AI in airline pricing has also attracted scrutiny from US lawmakers. Concerns center on whether airlines could eventually use personal information and consumer behavior to determine individualized ticket prices. Such practices could raise questions about fairness and transparency, particularly if passengers have limited understanding of how airlines calculate fares. Although AI-driven pricing remains an evolving area, the technology is already changing how airlines and travelers approach ticket purchases.

AI Startups Are Helping Travelers Claim Fare Differences

JetBack, Junova and Refare are developing services that monitor airfare changes after customers purchase their tickets. Instead of requiring passengers to manually search for lower prices, these companies use automated systems to identify potential savings and help customers request refunds or airline credits when eligible fares become cheaper.

The concept is relatively simple. A traveler might purchase a flight for $500, only to discover that the same ticket costs $400 several days later. Depending on the airline’s policies and ticket restrictions, the passenger could potentially recover the $100 difference. JetBack founder Bryan Dubno believes consumers should have access to technology capable of responding to airline pricing systems. His company says it has recovered approximately $2.4 million in refunds and travel credits since launching in early 2025.

Nearly 22% of Monitored Flights Experienced Price Drops

Airfare prices frequently change after passengers complete their bookings, creating opportunities for travelers who continue monitoring ticket costs. Junova examined approximately 10,000 flights between September 2025 and July 2026 and found that around 22% experienced at least one price reduction. Among flights with declining fares, approximately 40% recorded multiple price drops before departure.

Junova co-founder AJ Brustein compared airfare movements to fluctuations in financial markets, where prices can rise or fall depending on changing conditions. For passengers, these movements mean that purchasing a ticket does not necessarily guarantee they have secured the lowest available fare. Automated monitoring services can identify opportunities to recover savings without requiring travelers to repeatedly check prices themselves. However, whether those savings can actually be recovered depends on the airline’s fare rules.

How JetBack, Junova and Refare Make Money From Fare Drops

The three startups offer different payment structures, allowing customers to choose between subscription-based monitoring and fees tied to successful recoveries. JetBack charges an annual subscription of $100, while Junova takes 20% of recovered savings and Refare charges 25%. The latter two companies collect their fees when they successfully recover value for customers.

For example, if a passenger becomes eligible for a $100 fare adjustment, Junova’s reported fee structure would leave the customer with $80 in recovered value, while Refare’s would leave $75. These savings may arrive as airline credits rather than cash, depending on the carrier’s policies. The value of such services therefore varies according to how frequently customers travel, how much ticket prices fluctuate and whether the recovered credits can be used before they expire.

Why Changes to Airline Fees Created Opportunities for AI Startups

The emergence of automated airfare refund services is closely connected to changes introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the global travel disruption, many US airlines charged substantial fees for modifying non-refundable tickets, making it difficult for passengers to benefit from small fare reductions. In 2019 alone, US carriers collected approximately $2.84 billion in reservation cancellation and change fees.

When the pandemic disrupted international and domestic travel, airlines began removing change fees on many ticket categories to encourage customers to continue booking flights. Those changes made it more practical for travelers to seek fare adjustments when prices declined after purchase. AI startups have built their services around this flexibility, using technology to continuously monitor fares and identify opportunities that passengers might otherwise miss.

Alaska Airlines Changes Its Policy on Fare Drop Requests

The growing airfare-monitoring industry faces uncertainty because airlines retain control over their ticket modification policies. In early October 2026, Alaska Airlines stopped processing fare-drop adjustment requests through its customer service channels. Passengers seeking to take advantage of cheaper fares must instead cancel and rebook their tickets according to the airline’s applicable conditions.

Alaska Airlines said it does not charge cancellation fees for main cabin and first-class tickets. Basic economy fares face tighter restrictions, with eligible cancellations made at least 14 days before departure receiving a credit equivalent to 50% of the ticket’s value. Refare founder Justin Dombrow expressed concern that similar policy changes at other airlines could restrict the ability of startups to recover savings for customers. The development highlights how dependent these services remain on airline rules, regardless of how effectively their technology identifies lower prices.

Airline Travel Credits Could Still Benefit Carriers

Although AI-powered airfare monitoring services aim to help passengers recover money, airlines may also benefit when adjustments take the form of travel credits. Unlike cash refunds, airline credits generally require customers to make future purchases with the same carrier, allowing airlines to retain the value within their businesses.

This arrangement creates an unusual relationship between airlines and airfare-monitoring startups. Passengers gain access to savings they might otherwise overlook, while carriers can encourage future bookings through credits issued after fare adjustments. For airlines, accommodating eligible price reductions may support customer loyalty without necessarily resulting in an immediate cash outflow. Whether that arrangement remains attractive will depend on how carriers evaluate the financial impact of automated fare claims.

AI Travel Technology Is Giving Passengers More Control Over Flight Costs

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important across the travel industry, influencing everything from flight operations and customer service to ticket pricing and booking assistance. The emergence of JetBack, Junova and Refare shows how the same technology can also help consumers respond to changes in airline pricing rather than simply accepting the fare they originally paid.

These services are not guaranteed to produce refunds, and airline restrictions could limit their effectiveness as the market develops. Still, their growth points toward a broader opportunity for AI-powered consumer tools that monitor purchases, identify better prices and help customers recover value after transactions are completed. As airlines continue developing more advanced pricing systems, travelers may increasingly turn to automated services to ensure they are not missing potential savings.
