Philippine film Portrait No 72 has been named one of five finalists in an international artificial intelligence film competition held in Dubai. The short film was created by Filipino filmmakers using generative AI technology. It was shortlisted under the AI Film Award category during the One Billion Summit, a large-scale event focused on digital media, content creation, and emerging technologies.

The competition received thousands of entries from different countries. Only five films advanced to the final stage. Portrait No. 72 was the only Philippine entry to be selected among the finalists.

Filipino Filmmakers Behind Portrait No. 72 AI Film Dubai

The film was produced by Filipino filmmakers Darryll Rapacon and Rodson Suarez. The project marked their first collaboration centered on artificial intelligence-assisted filmmaking. AI tools were used to generate visual elements, while narrative structure and creative direction were handled by the filmmakers.

The creators stated that AI was applied as a production tool rather than a replacement for human decision-making. The film was completed using a combination of AI-generated imagery and traditional storytelling methods.

Story and Setting of Portrait No. 72 AI Film Dubai Finalist

Portrait No. 72 is set in Varanasi, India. The story follows an elderly photographer who takes final portraits of deceased individuals. The narrative focuses on the character’s final days and his interactions within the city. Visual scenes were created through AI image generation guided by written prompts and creative supervision.

The short film format emphasizes mood, setting, and visual continuity. Dialogue is limited, with storytelling driven primarily through imagery and pacing.

Dubai AI Film Competition and Selection Process

The AI Film Award forms part of the One Billion Summit held in Dubai. The event gathers creators, media professionals, and technology leaders from around the world. Shortlisted films were opened to public voting, which contributed to the final rankings alongside jury evaluation.
