AI startup Exa is making waves in the AI infrastructure space. It has recently raised major funding to scale its AI-native search technology. The company is focused on building a search engine that is built for AI systems, not human users. Moreover, it is positioning itself as a next-generation alternative to traditional search platforms such as Google.

Exa’s recent funding round underscores the growing need for infrastructure to support AI agents, autonomous systems and large language models. These systems need real-time web information to operate properly.

    What’s Exa?

Founded in 2021, Exa is an AI search infrastructure company that’s built APIs and tools for AI models to search, crawl and retrieve web data more effectively. Instead of ads and SEO-optimized pages like traditional search engines, the company claims its platform is designed to provide high-quality, structured and AI-friendly data.

The company’s technology uses embedding models and semantic search systems similar to those powering modern AI models. This allows Exa to understand intent and context rather than relying only on keyword matching.

According to Exa CEO Will Bryk, the future of search will increasingly be driven by AI agents rather than humans. The company believes AI systems will soon generate more search traffic than human users.

    Why AI Needs Search Infrastructure

Advanced AI systems need consistent access to accurate, up-to-date, and structured information on the web. Search engines were originally designed for people—not for machine reasoning or self-sufficient AI.

    Exa tackles this problem with:

    • AI-centric search APIs
    • Live web crawling
    • Parsing of structured data
    • Semantic search
    • Fast search speeds
    • Zero-data-retention privacy policies

The company says its infrastructure can handle over 100 search queries per second with low latency. This capability is aimed at AI developers building research assistants, coding copilots and enterprise AI systems.

Exa grows as AI search competition heats up

The race to build infrastructure for the AI era is on, as the market for AI search heats up. Companies like Perplexity, Parallel Web Systems, and Exa are all competing to fill the demand for AI-native search technology.

Exa, in contrast, takes a different approach. It focuses much more on backend infrastructure, rather than the consumer-facing search experience. The company positions itself as the “search engine for AI” — powering AI agents behind the scenes rather than directly competing for traditional search users.

Its technology is already being used by AI startups, consulting firms, and enterprise organizations. These organizations are looking to integrate live web intelligence into AI workflows.

Nvidia and Major Investors Back Exa

Exa has attracted support from several major investors, including Benchmark, Lightspeed Venture Partners, NVIDIA’s investment arm NVentures, and Y Combinator.

The funding is said to support Exa in: Building out its GPU infrastructure; Enhancing its indexing systems; Scaling its web crawling capabilities; Hiring more engineering talent; Developing more advanced AI search techniques. The company is also expanding internationally. This includes growing operations in Asia-Pacific markets such as Singapore.

Is AI The Future Of Search?

Exa’s explosive growth is part of a larger industry shift from human-based browsing to AI-based information retrieval.

As AI agents become more autonomous, companies will need infrastructure that can deliver knowledge at scale, quickly, accurately and in a machine-readable format. Startups like Exa are betting that the next generation of internet search will be built for AI systems first, not humans.

It remains to be seen whether Exa can truly challenge established search giants. However, its strong investor backing and growing adoption suggest the AI search infrastructure market is only getting started.
