Egypt bans AI for Quran interpretation following a religious ruling issued by Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah. The decision restricts the use of artificial intelligence systems for explaining or interpreting the Holy Quran. The ruling applies to AI tools such as ChatGPT and similar language models. Dar al-Ifta stated that Quranic interpretation must not rely on automated systems without qualified human scholarship.

Egypt Bans AI for Quran Interpretation Due to Accuracy Concerns

The ruling explained that AI systems do not possess true understanding of Quranic language or context. Dar al-Ifta said AI outputs may contain errors, contradictions, or unverified references. According to the authority, AI models generate responses by combining information from multiple sources. These sources may follow different theological traditions or methodologies. This process can result in inconsistent or misleading interpretations of Quranic verses.

Egypt Bans AI for Quran Interpretation Over Methodology Limits

Dar al-Ifta stated that artificial intelligence lacks a recognized scholarly framework for Quranic interpretation. Traditional tafsir requires expertise in Arabic linguistics, Islamic jurisprudence, hadith studies, and historical context. The ruling said AI tools do not follow these established interpretive principles. It also noted that AI systems operate without scholarly supervision or accountability.

Egypt Bans AI for Quran Interpretation and Issues Guidance

The ruling instructed Muslims to seek Quranic understanding from recognized scholars, classical tafsir texts, and trusted religious institutions. Dar al-Ifta emphasized that Quran interpretation should be conducted by qualified specialists using verified sources. The decision aimed to prevent the spread of incorrect or speculative explanations.

    Institutional Background and Digital Use

Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah was established in 1895. It serves as Egypt’s official body for issuing religious legal opinions. The institution operates as a government-affiliated, non-profit organization. While Egypt bans AI for Quran interpretation, Dar al-Ifta continues to use digital platforms for religious outreach. It operates FatwaPro, a mobile application that provides responses to religious questions worldwide. The ruling does not prohibit technology use in general. It specifically addresses Quranic interpretation through artificial intelligence.
