EqualWeb Brings AI Into Digital Accessibility With 2026 World AI Awards Nomination

EqualWeb has been nominated for the 2026 World AI Awards in the Accessibility category, recognising its work using artificial intelligence and automation to identify and remediate barriers that can make websites and digital documents difficult for people with disabilities to use.

Digital accessibility is an awkward problem for automation. A missing image description can sometimes be detected quickly. Whether that description actually makes sense to a blind user is another question. Reading order, tables, forms, keyboard navigation and constantly changing website content add further complications.

EqualWeb has built its platform around that gap. Instead of presenting AI as a complete substitute for accessibility professionals, the company combines automated testing and remediation with monitoring and certified human expertise.

AI works directly on common website accessibility barriers

At the centre of EqualWeb’s offering is its AI-powered Accessibility Widget, which can be installed on a website using a single line of JavaScript.

EqualWeb says the system can automatically remediate more than 80 common WCAG 2.2 accessibility issues in real time through the browser’s Document Object Model, or DOM. These can include missing alternative text, buttons without accessible labels, keyboard-focus problems and inadequate colour contrast.

The widget also provides nine accessibility profiles designed around different browsing requirements, including options for people who are blind, visually impaired, colour-blind or motor impaired, as well as profiles addressing dyslexia, cognitive and learning needs, ADHD and photosensitivity. More than 13 assistive tools are available alongside those profiles.

There is an important caveat. EqualWeb explicitly states that installing an accessibility widget does not, by itself, make a website ADA compliant. Some accessibility requirements need human judgment and testing rather than an automated fix.

Finding the problem comes before fixing it

EqualWeb also uses automation to help organisations discover accessibility problems before deciding how to remediate them.

Its Accessibility Checker scans an individual webpage against WCAG 2.2 and produces a score from zero to 100. Issues are organised by severity and linked to the relevant WCAG success criterion, with remediation guidance intended to give developers something more useful than a simple pass-or-fail result.

For organisations managing larger digital estates, EqualWeb offers full-site crawling and continuous monitoring. That matters because accessibility is rarely a one-off project. A compliant page can acquire a new barrier when someone uploads an image without alternative text, modifies a form or changes a component months later.

EqualWeb’s monitoring product is designed to repeatedly scan pages and flag new WCAG-related issues as websites evolve.

PDF accessibility gives AI another difficult job

Webpages are only part of the accessibility problem. PDFs remain common across government, education, finance and large organisations, and their underlying structure can be particularly troublesome for assistive technology.

EqualWeb has developed a separate AI-powered PDF accessibility platform that checks documents for problems involving structure, reading order, alternative text, tables, forms, fonts, text encoding, contrast, language and metadata. Its PDF Checker runs more than 80 automated checks across eight categories.

AI can also suggest alternative text for images and automatically build or repair structural elements that screen readers depend on. For scanned documents, optical character recognition can turn image-only pages into searchable, readable text.

Again, EqualWeb draws a line around what automation can prove. The company says an automated accessibility score is not a legal compliance certificate, and complex tables, contextual alternative text and nuanced reading orders can still require expert assessment.

That distinction is important. The interesting part of EqualWeb’s approach is not the claim that AI can solve accessibility on its own. It is the attempt to use automation for repetitive, high-volume work while leaving harder judgment calls to people.

AI and human accessibility expertise meet in one workflow

EqualWeb describes its broader product as a hybrid accessibility platform.

Automated tools can detect and address recurring technical issues at scale. Its Managed Compliance service adds audits, manual remediation, screen-reader and keyboard testing, continuous monitoring and work by certified accessibility professionals for organisations requiring deeper verification.

The company says its technology serves organisations ranging from small businesses and agencies to government bodies and large enterprises. EqualWeb also reports that its systems serve nearly 15 million unique visitors every 24 hours, based on its own 2026 analytics.

That combination makes accessibility an interesting test case for practical AI. The technology can process large numbers of pages, identify repeatable problems and automate certain fixes. Human expertise remains necessary where meaning, context and actual user experience cannot be reduced to a technical scan.

Graham Cooke, President of the World AI Awards, said:

“EqualWeb’s nomination highlights an area of artificial intelligence that has a very direct human purpose: making digital information and services easier for more people to access.

“Using AI to identify accessibility barriers, support remediation and work alongside specialist human expertise shows how automation can tackle a problem that affects websites and digital documents at enormous scale. We congratulate EqualWeb on its 2026 World AI Awards nomination in the Accessibility category and look forward to following the continued development of its technology.”

The World AI Awards recognises organisations, individuals, products and technologies contributing to the development and real-world application of artificial intelligence across industries.

EqualWeb’s nomination in the Accessibility category puts the focus on a part of AI that users may never consciously notice. When accessibility technology works well, the result is often straightforward: a button that a screen reader can identify, a document that can be navigated logically, an image with a useful description or a website that can be operated without a mouse.

Those details are small until they stop someone from accessing the information or service they need.
