Anthropic is making another major infrastructure bet as demand for artificial intelligence continues to climb. The Claude developer has signed a seven-year cloud services agreement with Akamai Technologies worth $11.6 billion, giving Anthropic access to more computing capacity as it scales its models and enterprise services.

The agreement could eventually become much larger. Akamai said the relationship includes room for an additional $9 billion in commitments, which could push the total value of the partnership close to $20 billion.

The deal is notable not only because of its size. It also includes an equity component that could give Anthropic ownership of as much as 5% of Akamai, linking the two companies more closely than a typical cloud services contract.

Anthropic Commits $11.6 Billion to Akamai Cloud Services

Anthropic has committed to spending $11.6 billion on Akamai cloud services over seven years. The infrastructure will support the AI company’s expanding computing requirements as Claude adoption grows across enterprise, developer and consumer markets. For Akamai, the agreement represents one of the largest cloud commitments in its history and strengthens its position in the fast-growing AI infrastructure market.

The partnership also shows how AI developers are increasingly securing computing resources years in advance rather than relying entirely on short-term capacity. As AI models become more widely used, cloud infrastructure has become just as important as the models themselves.

Deal Could Expand to Nearly $20 Billion

The initial agreement may only be the first phase of the partnership. Akamai said Anthropic could commit another $9 billion under the terms of the expanded relationship, bringing the potential total value to approximately $20 billion.

The additional spending is not guaranteed, but the structure gives Anthropic flexibility to increase its use of Akamai infrastructure if its computing needs continue to grow. That could become important as Claude handles more enterprise workloads, longer prompts and increasingly complex AI agent tasks.

For Akamai, the expansion option creates the possibility of even larger long-term revenue from one of the world’s most prominent AI companies.

Anthropic Could Acquire Up to 5% of Akamai

The cloud agreement also includes a significant equity component. Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant covering approximately 7.7 million shares on an as-converted basis, potentially representing around 5% of Akamai’s outstanding common stock.

The warrant has an exercise price of $111.33 per share. Part of the equity stake is connected to the initial $11.6 billion commitment, while the remaining portion depends on the partnership expanding further.

This structure gives Anthropic a financial interest in Akamai’s future performance while giving Akamai a powerful incentive to support the AI company’s long-term infrastructure requirements. It makes the relationship closer to a strategic partnership than a standard cloud services arrangement.

Akamai Plans Billions in Infrastructure Spending

Supporting Anthropic’s workloads will require Akamai to make substantial investments of its own. Reuters reported that the company expects to spend around $5.5 billion in total capital expenditure to support the agreement.

Akamai also plans to increase its 2026 capital spending by roughly $1.7 billion. The additional investment will help the company secure hardware, memory and other infrastructure required for Anthropic’s deployment.

That spending highlights the physical scale behind modern AI services. Running advanced AI models requires far more than software. It depends on large numbers of servers, networking equipment, memory systems, data centers and power infrastructure working together.

Akamai Shares Rise After the Announcement

Investors responded positively after the partnership was announced. Akamai shares rose sharply in extended trading as markets reacted to the size and duration of Anthropic’s commitment.

The agreement gives Akamai something cloud providers value highly: predictable demand extending several years into the future. Long-term contracts can help justify large infrastructure investments because providers have greater visibility into future revenue.

It also strengthens Akamai’s position beyond its traditional businesses in content delivery, cybersecurity and edge computing. AI infrastructure is becoming a much bigger part of the company’s growth strategy.

AI Companies Are Locking Down Compute Earlier

The Anthropic-Akamai agreement reflects a broader change in the artificial intelligence industry. AI companies are increasingly trying to secure computing capacity before they actually need it.

Training and operating large AI models requires huge amounts of infrastructure, and shortages in chips, memory or data center capacity can slow product expansion. Long-term cloud agreements help reduce that risk by giving AI developers more certainty around future capacity.

This approach also gives cloud providers a reason to invest ahead of demand. When a customer commits billions of dollars over several years, infrastructure companies can expand more aggressively with greater confidence that the capacity will eventually be used.

Anthropic’s Infrastructure Needs Continue to Grow

Anthropic’s computing requirements are rising alongside the growing use of Claude. The company continues to expand its AI models across coding, enterprise automation, research, customer service and consumer applications.

Each new use case increases the amount of infrastructure needed to run Claude reliably. Even if individual models become more efficient, overall demand can still increase because more users are interacting with them and more businesses are integrating AI directly into daily operations.

AI agents could push those requirements even higher. Unlike traditional chatbots that wait for a single user request, agents can perform multiple tasks continuously, increasing the number of computing operations required behind the scenes.

Akamai Pushes Deeper Into AI Infrastructure

The partnership gives Akamai a stronger role in the rapidly expanding AI cloud market. The company has historically been best known for content delivery networks, cybersecurity and edge services, but it has increasingly invested in cloud computing infrastructure.

Anthropic’s commitment provides a major validation of that strategy. Instead of competing only as a traditional cloud provider, Akamai is positioning its distributed infrastructure as a platform capable of supporting large-scale AI workloads.

That could also increase competition within the broader cloud market as AI companies look beyond the largest hyperscale providers when securing infrastructure.

Infrastructure Is Becoming Part of the AI Arms Race

Much of the AI industry conversation focuses on model quality, benchmarks and new features, but infrastructure has quietly become one of the most important competitive factors.

Companies with reliable access to large amounts of computing capacity can train models faster, deploy products more widely and support larger enterprise customers. Companies that cannot secure enough capacity risk having their growth limited by infrastructure rather than software.

The Anthropic-Akamai agreement shows how seriously leading AI developers are treating that challenge. An $11.6 billion commitment over seven years is not simply a cloud purchase. It is a long-term attempt to make sure infrastructure does not become a bottleneck.

    Conclusion

Anthropic’s $11.6 billion agreement with Akamai marks another major escalation in the race to secure artificial intelligence infrastructure. The partnership could eventually approach $20 billion if Anthropic expands its commitments, while the accompanying warrant could give the AI company ownership of up to 5% of Akamai.

For Anthropic, the agreement provides additional computing capacity as Claude adoption continues to grow. For Akamai, it brings a major AI customer into its cloud business and gives the company a stronger position in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

The biggest AI battles may still be fought over models, but deals like this show that the infrastructure underneath them is becoming just as important.
