Index Ventures is putting considerably more money behind its belief that artificial intelligence will reshape industries far beyond the chatbot market. The venture capital firm has announced new funds that bring its total available investment capital to $3.5 billion, covering startups from their earliest seed rounds through large growth-stage investments.

This is not one giant AI-only fund. The money is spread across three vehicles, giving Index room to invest in young companies, established startups and businesses approaching the public markets. AI, though, sits right at the centre of the firm’s pitch.

Index Ventures Splits the Capital Across Three Funds

The new capital includes a $400 million seed fund and a $900 million venture fund. Index has also expanded its growth fund to $2.2 billion, up from the $1.5 billion vehicle it announced in 2024. That increase adds another $700 million for later-stage deals.

Combined, the three funds give Index Ventures $3.5 billion to deploy across seed, venture and growth investments. The firm said the structure will allow it to support founders from their first institutional funding round through later stages, including the years leading towards an initial public offering.

The announcement also arrives as Index marks 30 years in venture capital. During that period, it has backed companies including Scale AI, Wiz, Robinhood, Roblox, Figma, Revolut, Datadog and Adyen. That track record gives the firm plenty of reasons to keep writing cheques while other investors remain cautious about high startup valuations.

AI Is Speeding Up the Startup Building Cycle

Index believes AI is changing how quickly founders can move from an idea to a working product. Smaller teams can now write software, analyse customer data, automate operations and test new services without building every piece of technology from scratch. That has lowered some of the traditional barriers to starting a company.

It has also made the market much louder. Thousands of AI startups are chasing similar customers, often with products built on the same underlying models. The hard part is no longer launching an AI tool. It is building something defensible before competitors catch up.

Index appears ready to bet on founders who can clear that hurdle. The firm identified infrastructure, cybersecurity, financial technology, healthcare, productivity software and consumer products as areas where artificial intelligence could unlock another wave of disruption.

That is a broad hunting ground, deliberately so. Index is not tying itself to one model provider or a single category such as generative search. It wants exposure to the software, security and industry-specific systems being built around the wider AI shift.

The Firm Can Back Startups From Seed to Scale

Having separate funds for different stages gives Index more flexibility when promising companies begin to grow. A startup could receive an early cheque from the seed fund, return for a larger venture round and later secure growth capital without needing Index to step aside. That continuity can matter when funding markets turn difficult or when a company needs substantial capital to compete internationally.

It also allows the firm to chase very different kinds of AI businesses. A small team developing a specialised model may need a modest initial investment. An AI infrastructure company buying chips and building data systems could burn through hundreds of millions of dollars before reaching scale.

Both can now fit somewhere inside Index’s funding strategy. The firm said it plans to invest across the roughly 10-hour time-zone corridor stretching from Tel Aviv to San Francisco, rather than focusing only on Silicon Valley.

The Wiz Deal Gave Index a Huge Exit

The timing of the new funds is difficult to separate from Index’s success with cloud security company Wiz. Index was the largest outside shareholder in Wiz, which Google acquired for $32 billion in a deal completed in March 2026. Wiz became part of Google Cloud while continuing to support other major cloud platforms.

PYMNTS reported that Index generated close to $9 billion this year from the Wiz transaction and other deals. The exit gave the venture firm fresh momentum as it returned to investors for more capital. Wiz also sits neatly inside Index’s AI investment argument.

Businesses are moving sensitive data and critical systems into cloud environments while adopting AI across their operations. Attackers are using many of the same tools to automate and sharpen cyberattacks. That makes security infrastructure one of the less glamorous but more urgent parts of the AI economy. Index backed that shift early. Now it has significantly more money to look for the next version of it.

Big AI Funds Still Face a Valuation Problem

A $3.5 billion capital pool gives Index plenty of reach, but it does not make every AI deal attractive. Competition among venture firms has pushed valuations sharply higher for startups with experienced founders, strong technical teams or links to major AI labs. Some companies are raising enormous rounds before proving that customers will stick around or pay enough to support the business.

There is also a growing gap between businesses that use AI as a feature and companies that have built a durable technical advantage around it. Index will have to decide which founders are building something genuinely hard to copy—and which ones have simply reached the market during a funding rush.

The firm’s multi-stage strategy gives it time to make those calls. It can start with smaller bets, increase its position when a company gains traction and reserve larger cheques for startups that survive the early noise. AI funding has hardly been scarce. What Index Ventures just added is staying power.
