Meta Partners With Reliance To Build Its First AI-Enabled Data Center In India Meta is growing its artificial intelligence infrastructure in India with a big new deal with Reliance Industries. The company announced a deal to lease its first AI-enabled data center in the country. Moreover, this is a major move in Meta’s global strategy for AI infrastructure.

The new facility will be in Jamnagar, Gujarat, where Reliance is constructing a sprawling data center campus. Meta said the first phase of the project would provide 168 MW of capacity. They have options to expand further as demand for AI computing grows.

Meta to boost AI infrastructure in India

The partnership for a Meta AI data centre in India is expected to address the company’s increasing need for high-performance computing, connectivity, and AI services. As artificial intelligence plays a more significant role in Meta’s products, the company is investing in infrastructure. As a result, Meta can deliver faster and more reliable AI-powered experiences to large markets.

India is one of Meta’s most important regions, with a massive digital user base across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads. By placing AI infrastructure closer to one of its fastest-growing communities, Meta aims to improve performance. Furthermore, Meta will support future AI capabilities for users, businesses, and developers in the region.

Meta said the Jamnagar data center will help power its products and AI capabilities. At the same time, it will support Meta’s broader ambition to deliver more advanced AI experiences.

    Why Jamnagar Matters

Jamnagar is becoming a strategic location for AI and data infrastructure. Reliance is building one of the world’s largest data center campuses there, supported by access to significant energy resources.

The data center leased by Meta will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater. Meta also stated that it will cover the full cost of the energy and water needed to support the facility.

This makes the project remarkable not only in terms of its AI computing ability, but also in terms of its focus on infrastructure sustainability. As AI models grow in size and resource consumption, access to clean energy, water management and reliable connectivity becomes more and more important for the world’s technology companies.

    A Deeper Meta-Reliance Tie-Up

The new data center deal builds on an existing relationship between Meta and Reliance Industries. Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020. This expanded collaboration on digital connectivity, commerce and small business growth in India.

The partnership has since grown to artificial intelligence, with efforts to bring Meta’s open-source AI models to Indian enterprises and developers.

Now the companies are taking that relationship into physical AI infrastructure. This shows how major tech companies are increasingly relying on regional data center partnerships to meet the growing demand for AI compute.

Meta Announces Clean Energy Deals Worth Almost 1 GW

Besides the Reliance data center announcement, Meta also announced new clean and renewable energy deals in India with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy.

CleanMax will support 837 MW of new solar and wind projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka. Fourth Partner Energy will support 88 MW of new solar and wind projects across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

Together, these deals represent nearly 1 GW of new clean energy capacity in India. Meta said these agreements are part of its effort to support its infrastructure growth with renewable power. This also aligns with its global goal of matching operations with 100% clean and renewable energy.

Why this matters for the AI race

The deal between the Meta AI data centre and India underscores an important trend in the global AI race: infrastructure is beginning to matter as much as models and applications.

Companies building sophisticated AI systems need huge amounts of computing power. That demand is driving tech giants to build or lease massive data centers in strategic regions around the world.

India’s partnership could raise its profile as a global hub for AI infrastructure. With its rapidly growing digital economy, huge user base and expanding clean energy ecosystem, India is becoming a more attractive spot for AI investment.

For Meta, the acquisition provides the company with additional local capacity to support AI products and services at scale. It also helps deepen its footprint in one of the world’s most important digital markets.

    The Bottom Line

Meta’s deal with Reliance points to a major build-out of AI infrastructure in India. The lease of the 168 MW Jamnagar data center gives Meta a better base for powering AI-enabled products closer to Indian users. In addition, its clean energy agreements show how growth in AI infrastructure is becoming more and more linked to renewable power.

As competition in artificial intelligence heats up, data centers are emerging as the backbone of the industry. Meta’s latest move in India demonstrates the next phase of the AI race will be based not just on models, but also on energy, infrastructure and global partnerships.
