UAE Develops AI-Powered System to Track Media Misinformation in Real Time

The UAE is putting artificial intelligence to work against a problem AI itself has helped complicate: misinformation.

The International Centre for Combating Media Disinformation (ICCMD) is developing an AI-powered system for monitoring digital media. It will analyze online content, identify patterns, and support verification efforts. The system is also designed to track how narratives spread across digital channels.

This isn’t simply another fact-checking tool. The project points toward a broader approach where AI continuously watches the information environment. Human media expertise will remain part of the process.

AI Will Monitor Digital Content as It Spreads

The ICCMD system is being built to monitor digital content in real time. It will analyze keywords, topics, and broader media narratives. The technology will also examine how information spreads and identify emerging trends. That could help analysts spot suspicious patterns earlier. Instead of examining a questionable story only after it goes viral, monitoring can begin while the narrative is developing.

The System Goes Beyond Finding Individual False Claims

Misinformation rarely exists as one isolated post. A misleading claim can move between websites, social networks, and different online communities. The ICCMD platform will examine those dissemination patterns. It will also track trends and indicators linked to digital narratives. This gives analysts more context around how information travels. AI can process that activity at a scale that would be difficult through manual monitoring alone.

Human Expertise Will Still Be Part of the Process

The project is not being presented as an AI system that independently decides what is true. ICCMD plans to combine artificial intelligence with professional expertise. AI will support data analysis, monitoring, and verification activities. Media professionals can then bring editorial judgment and context into the process. That combination matters because misinformation can involve nuance that automated detection may struggle to interpret correctly.

Faster Verification Could Become the Bigger Advantage

Speed matters when misleading information begins spreading online. A false claim can reach huge audiences before journalists or institutions have time to respond. ICCMD wants AI to improve the efficiency of monitoring and analysis. Automated systems can scan large volumes of content and highlight unusual patterns. Human teams can then focus their attention where it is needed most. The result could be a much faster verification workflow.

UAE Launches an International Media Integrity Charter

Technology is only one part of the initiative. ICCMD also launched the International Charter for Media Integrity and Combating Misinformation. The charter aims to connect media organizations with professional, academic, and research institutions. Participants would work around shared principles for verification, media integrity, and professional responsibility. The goal is to create cooperation that reaches beyond individual organizations or national borders.

Fighting Misinformation Is Becoming a Cross-Border Problem

ICCMD Chairman Issa Al Shaiji said misinformation requires cooperation between media, professional, and academic institutions. Modern technology also needs to be part of that response. Digital narratives can cross borders almost immediately, making isolated responses less effective. The new charter attempts to create a shared framework around that challenge. Meanwhile, the AI platform provides the technical monitoring layer.

The UAE Is Building a Wider AI Defense Against Fake Content

The ICCMD project isn’t the UAE’s only move in this area. Earlier in 2026, Emirati cybersecurity specialist Bashayer AlSalami introduced Deepy. The AI-powered platform analyzes images, video, and audio for signs of manipulation. It was designed partly in response to the growing threat from deepfakes and AI-generated content. UAE authorities have also been using AI and advanced digital tools to identify misleading content and suspicious online activity.

AI Is Creating Misinformation — and Becoming Part of the Defense

Generative AI has dramatically lowered the barrier to creating convincing fake content. Images, audio, video, and written material can now be produced quickly and at scale. Detection technology is moving in the opposite direction. AI can scan enormous information streams and identify signals that deserve closer inspection. The ICCMD system reflects that changing dynamic. The same broad technology transforming digital media is now becoming part of the infrastructure designed to protect its credibility.

The difficult part won’t be simply detecting suspicious content. Accuracy, context, transparency, and human oversight will matter just as much. For the UAE, the strategy appears to be taking shape around both technology and professional standards. That could become increasingly important as synthetic media becomes harder to distinguish from authentic content.
