Meta’s new SAM 3 Model now powers AI video effects inside Edits app

    Key Highlights:

    • SAM 3 model now enables object-level AI effects, which allows creators to apply visuals like outlines, blur, and glitter to specific people or items in a video.
    • Edits app now supports faster, smarter creativity, with AI-powered effects designed to work directly on mobile without complex editing steps.
    • The update bolster Meta’s push in the creative industry, positioning Edits as a serious alternative to standalone video editing apps powered by advanced AI.

If you are someone who posts a lot of Reels on Instagram, then you probably know about the Edits app. The company announced it back in April this year, as a move to give creators an easy way to edit their Reels, post directly to Instagram or Facebook, without leaving the app, and share those to family and friends. Now, the company is doubling down on what I’d like to call mobile-first video editing.

AI effects powered by SAM 3 inside the Edits app

Yesterday, Meta rolled out a fresh update for the Edits app that puts creators in the driving seat for faster editing process, without losing control. In an update to its Edit launch announcement post, Meta announced that the latest update introduces AI-powered effects, in-built Reels remixing, and planning tools that bring Edits closer to an all-in-one creation workflow.

One of the standout additions in this update is AI-powered video effects. Meta explicitly mentions that the visual effects are now powered by its SAM 3 model, which it announced last month. Speaking of SAM 3 models, the company also recently dropped the SAM 3 Audio model that can isolate audio elements from any kind of recordings with utmost precision.

Speaking of SAM 3’s usage in the Edits app, it allows creators to apply visual effects to specific people or objects inside a video, rather than across the entire frame. You can include playful options like Scribble, Outline, and Glitter, along with more practical tools such as blurring objects or tagging outfits inside the Edits app. I’ve used the Edits app in the past, and can tell that the latest addition will help creators point at what matters and let the AI handle the rest. Just to be clear, this kind of selective editing isn’t very common among mobile video editing apps.

    Reels remixing, Storyboards & more

Besides AI, Meta has also integrated Reels directly inside the Edits app. Meaning, you can now pull public Reels from a built-in library, then remix, react to, or use them as creative starting points. If you are short on Reels ideas, this feature can be a lifesaver.

What’s nice about this feature is that you get credits automatically in case your Reel ends up inside someone else’s video. That keeps attribution intact while encouraging reuse, which has long been one of Meta’s strongest growth levers for short video.

If you often struggle planning Reels, the good news is that Storyboards now give creators a dedicated space to map out scripts, teleprompter cues, clips, and notes before editing even begins. Meta has designed this feature for semi-pro creators and small teams, not just casual users. Additionally, Edits adds professionally styled title cards, which aims to keep viewers hooked to your videos in the initial seconds of it. Well… first impressions matter after all.

Text, captions, and templates also get a boost

With this update, Meta is expanding Edits’ text and caption tools to offer a growing library of styles that combine fonts, colors, animations, and effects. Notably, the company is adding more fonts for Indic languages, a move from the company to make Edits more friendly for global creators. Last but not least, templates are being added as part of the update too. It allows users to quickly create videos around popular music, timed cuts, and visual styles. Creators can also share templates, turning Edits into a trend engine rather than just an editor.

All that said, these updates show Meta’s intent clearly: the Edits app isn’t just about trimming clips anymore. It’s becoming a full mobile studio, backed by AI, designed to keep creators inside Meta’s ecosystem from idea to publish.
