Meta is reportedly working on a new AI-powered pendant in another major move by the company into wearable artificial intelligence.

According to a report cited by TechCrunch, Meta plans to begin testing the device within the next year. The wearable is expected to build on technology from Limitless, an AI device startup Meta acquired in late 2025. Limitless had developed an AI pendant that could be clipped to clothing or worn as a necklace to record and organize conversations.

Meta’s reported move suggests the company is looking beyond smart glasses as it explores new ways to bring AI assistants into everyday life.

    Meta’s new AI wearables strategy

Meta has already poured billions into AI-enabled hardware, particularly with its smart glasses and Reality Labs division. A pendant-style device could give the company a new form factor for interacting with AI that doesn’t rely on screens or traditional mobile devices.

An AI pendant could function as a personal assistant, listening in, taking notes, summarizing conversations and helping you remember things later. This kind of device would probably be popular with professionals, students, creators and anyone else who prefers a more passive way to interact with AI throughout the day.

But the idea also raises big questions about privacy, consent and usefulness.

AI Pendants Still Trying to Gain Traction

Wearable AI has struggled to gain a toehold in the mainstream. Early devices in the category were criticized for being pricey, limited in practical use or uncomfortable for everyday social situations.

The biggest problem could be privacy. A device designed to record conversations could raise concerns for people nearby, especially if they are unaware they are being recorded. For Meta, a company that has been under scrutiny for years over its data collection practices, this could be a major obstacle.

To succeed, Meta would need to demonstrate that its AI pendant delivers real value, while also offering robust privacy protections to users and bystanders.

Meta May Also Expand AI Glasses, Workplace Wearables

The reported AI pendant isn’t the only wearable project Meta may be exploring. The company is also reportedly planning to expand its AI glasses lineup and launch a business-focused subscription called Wearables for Work.

It could be a hint of a bigger play by Meta to market AI wearables not just as consumer gadgets but also as productivity tools for workplaces.

A subscription geared toward work might include meeting summaries, task tracking, voice search, and AI assistance for business discussions. If successful, it could give Meta a recurring revenue stream from wearable AI products.

    Reality Labs Needs a Win

Meta’s hardware-focused Reality Labs division has been costly for the company. The division reportedly lost billions in the first quarter of 2026, making successful wearable products more important to Meta’s long-term hardware ambitions.

An AI pendant could be part of Meta’s attempt to turn years of investment in augmented reality, smart glasses, and AI assistants into products that consumers and businesses actually use.

    The Bigger AI Hardware Race

Meta is not alone in chasing AI hardware. Several companies have tried to create dedicated AI devices, while others are exploring wearables, smart glasses, and voice-first assistants.

The opportunity is clear: whoever builds the most useful AI wearable could shape how people interact with artificial intelligence outside phones and laptops.

But the risk is just as clear. If the device feels invasive, unnecessary, or socially awkward, it could struggle like earlier AI gadgets.

    Why It Matters

Meta’s reported AI pendant shows that the next phase of artificial intelligence may move beyond apps and chatbots into devices people wear throughout the day.

If Meta can solve the privacy and usefulness challenges, an AI pendant could become a new category of personal AI assistant. But if users see it as another always-listening device, the product could face strong resistance.

The report also highlights a larger trend: Big Tech is racing to find the next major AI interface. For Meta, that interface may not be a phone screen — it could be a pair of glasses, a workplace wearable, or a small pendant around your neck.
