Meta has inked an agreement with cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services (AWS), employing tens of millions of AWS Graviton processors cores to drive next-generation agentic AI systems. In fact, this collaboration can be described as the Meta AWS Graviton AI partnership, which aims to push boundaries in artificial intelligence.

This development signifies a major transition in artificial intelligence infrastructure as CPUs take precedence over the use of GPUs in AI systems.

One of the Biggest AI Infrastructure Deals Ever

Through the agreement, Meta is working with AWS on the integration of AWS Graviton cores into its AI computing architecture, and is in position to leverage more chips to meet its computing requirements as part of the ongoing Meta AWS Graviton AI partnership.

The deal builds on a well-established collaboration between Meta and AWS, which already provides services that facilitate Meta’s AI development, such as Amazon Bedrock.

The deal will make Meta the largest user of AWS’ custom-made chips globally.

Why Graviton CPUs Are Ideal for AI Infrastructure

In the past, GPUs have played a leading role in powering AI systems because the technology requires huge amounts of computing resources. However, this development shows how CPUs are increasingly being embraced in the development of certain types of AI.

Graviton CPUs have been specially developed for AI applications such as:

    • Real-time reasoning
    • Code generation
    • Data searching and processing
    • Task orchestration

These applications are integral to agentic AI, which entails independent reasoning and decision-making in artificial intelligence systems. Moreover, the Meta AWS Graviton AI partnership is driving innovation in this area.

New Graviton5 chips from AWS are custom-made for these workloads.

Agentic AI Systems Are the Future of Artificial Intelligence

The primary objective behind this collaboration between Meta and AWS is the deployment of advanced agentic AI systems, which represent the next generation of AI. Clearly, the Meta AWS Graviton AI partnership will play a central role in realising this vision.

In contrast to existing AI systems that simply respond to inputs, agentic AI systems are able to:

    • Reason
    • Make decisions
    • Plan ahead

And continuously adapt in real-time, among other features. As a result, new AI infrastructure is required for such tasks, especially when it comes to constant computing.

A Multi-Device Strategy for Agentic AI

While AWS is only part of the picture, Meta is also making sure it has all the hardware tools in place to ensure efficient performance of these AI systems.

Specifically, Meta will be integrating CPUs, GPUs, and custom silicon into its AI architecture. The partnership with AWS complements efforts to build out AI infrastructure. Learn more about AI hardware trends.

A diversified approach is increasingly becoming necessary because no single chip architecture can do everything for AI effectively.

    Why It’s Important

This partnership represents a fundamental change in the artificial intelligence world:

    • CPUs, not just GPUs, are emerging as critical AI components
    • Cloud providers are playing a bigger role in AI infrastructure
    • Competing hardware architectures are shaping AI innovation

With this partnership, Meta will be better positioned to build and deploy AI technologies at scale, addressing the needs of the current age.

The Wider Context of AI Infrastructure Development

In this case, Meta has demonstrated an ability to evolve its computing infrastructure to meet the demands of next-gen AI, which includes the following trends:

    • AI is shifting towards agent-based, autonomous systems
    • Infrastructure is changing to facilitate real-time computing capabilities
    • Scalability and efficiency matter just as much as performance

Thanks to its partnership with AWS, Meta will be capable of creating artificial intelligence solutions on a global scale, potentially reaching billions of users.
