Google reportedly working on new ‘Lecture’ mode for NotebookLM

    Key Highlights:

    • Google is testing a new Lecture mode in NotebookLM that can generate AI-powered audio lectures lasting up to 30 minutes.
    • The Lecture format focuses on single-host, long-form explanations designed for complex and technical source material.
    • A language selector and upcoming British English narration suggest NotebookLM’s audio features are expanding globally.

If you use NotebookLM, this might be the news you wanted to hear for a long time now. NotebookLM is unarguably one of the best AI tools to exist at this point, but Google isn’t done with pushing even more upgrades. The company is reportedly working on another notable upgrade related to long-form audio learning behind the scenes.

NotebookLM’s Lecture mode focuses on long-form explanations

The news comes via Testing Catalog, which reported that Google is working on a new “Lecture” format for Audio Overviews that can provide AI-generated audio of up to 30 minutes long. To catch you up, NotebookLM already supports different Audio Overview styles, including Deep Dive, Brief, Critique, and Debate. However, the upcoming “Lecture” format appears to have a different use case altogether.

To give you an idea, it’s similar to comprehensive, single-host narrations that are quite similar to traditional classroom or university lectures. It isn’t a conversational back-and-forth interaction or structured audio summaries that we are all used to. When combined with the “Long” length option, the Lecture mode reportedly generates an audio experience of close to half an hour.

With the “Lecture’ mode, you get a continuous voice narration with major focus on explaining concepts, offering connections between sources, and building context rather than simply summarizing material. The report suggests that this can be useful for users working through complex or technical documents.

The new mode includes language picker

What’s interesting is that the Lecture mode also appears to include a language selector, suggesting that users may be able to generate long-form lectures in different languages based on their settings. If confirmed, it would make NotebookLM appeal to more international students, researchers, and multilingual teams.

Meanwhile, Google has also teased the new narration options for NotebookLM. In a post on X dated December 22, the company hinted at the arrival of a British English voice, which is on track for a 2026 launch. Assuming that it is surely coming, this would expand the already-growing set of voices available for generated Audio Overviews.

If Google rolls this feature out to the masses, the workflow is expected to remain familiar. You would upload or select a set of sources, then choose the Lecture format from the Audio Overview picker and generate the audio output. The difference lies in how NotebookLM processes the material, favoring structured explanation over brevity.

A feature targeted for students, researchers, and more

Looking at the feature, one can tell that Google is targeting students, researchers, and professionals who want a listenable way to process information. If you are someone who is preparing for an exam, pre-meeting briefings, and reviewing internal documentation while travelling, this feature can be super handy for you.

What’s interesting is that Testing Catalog has already generated a sample 30-minute lecture using internal sources to demonstrate the pacing and structure of the feature. You can check the sample below. All that said, the Lecture format isn’t publicly available at this time, and Google has not confirmed when, or if, it will officially launch. If we come across any information, we’ll let you know.
