The field of robotics just got another boost with a highly impressive announcement made by a French artificial intelligence startup developing humanoid robots. Genesis AI unveiled a new robotic hand. It was designed to perform tasks in a similar way as humans do. These include cooking, cracking eggs, wiring electronics, and even playing the piano.

The Future of Humanoid Robotic Hands

Genesis AI says its robotic system is bringing us ever closer to having general-purpose humanoid robots. These robots will be ready to use in our daily lives in home settings, factories, and other environments.

Genesis AI Takes Steps Toward Advanced Humanoid Robotics

In recent demonstrations, Genesis AI showed off several exciting robotics capabilities developed by the company.

The startup presented a robot hand that could play the piano. It completed pieces with impressive accuracy at about 130 beats per minute. Another video showed the autonomous egg-cracking ability of the robot using only one hand. This represents one of the most challenging actions for a robot right now.

Both actions performed by Genesis AI’s robot hand were completed fully autonomously and without any teleoperated control from humans. According to Genesis AI’s CEO, Zhou Xian, the company’s goal is to build general-purpose humanoid robots.

    Humanoid Robotics: Why It Matters

Robot manipulation, which involves a robot performing actions using its limbs, has always been one of the hardest problems to solve in the field of artificial intelligence.

Modern AI models have become highly sophisticated when it comes to natural language processing and computer vision tasks. Manipulation of physical objects, however, has remained difficult to achieve so far.

Human hands contain numerous sensory organs, flexibility, and fine motor skills. Current robot manipulators aim to mimic human hands using a combination of motors, sensors, tactile feedback systems, and AI systems trained on complex motion learning tasks. The hand of Genesis AI reportedly contains up to 20 motors and 20 degrees of freedom. These are embedded right in the robot’s hand.

Training AI With Real World Human Movements

Alongside the robot manipulator, Genesis AI developed proprietary data capture gloves. These gloves allow the company to gather huge amounts of data related to human movements and tactile interactions with objects.

Thanks to this solution, the company can train AI models using data gathered from the real world. Additionally, the training process involves a combination of real-world experience and AI simulations. Combining these two allows Genesis AI to accelerate the development and improve the effectiveness of robots.

The Rise of Humanoid Robot Industry

As robotics becomes one of the key areas of development for artificial intelligence, the industry sees exponential progress being made each year. Figure AI, Skild AI, Unitree Robotics, and various Chinese robotics startups are investing billions. They are researching the future of humanoids.

Experts agree that robotics could turn out to be one of the biggest revolutions of AI technology right after generative AI and large language models. Recent improvements in multimodal models, reinforcement learning, and simulation technology are making humanoid robot development possible.

When Can AI Robots Come Home?

As for Genesis AI, it hopes to bring humanoid robots to industrial settings and homes. While we still won’t see robots completely replacing human workers anytime soon, it’s safe to assume that the latest demonstration is a big step towards building robots capable of physically manipulating items.

The field of robotics is expected to witness an explosive period of development over the next several years. AI models will become increasingly capable of reasoning, planning movements, and interacting with physical environments.

At least for now, the robot hand presented by Genesis AI proves yet again that we might see humanoid robots sooner than we expect.
