Expedia Pushes Back on the Idea That One AI Agent Will Control Your Entire Trip

The race to build an AI agent capable of planning and booking an entire vacation is getting crowded. Expedia, though, is not convinced that one digital assistant will end up controlling the whole journey.

Expedia Group CEO Ariane Gorin has outlined a more fragmented vision of AI-powered travel. Rather than expecting travelers to hand everything — destination research, hotel selection, flights, payments and changes — to one conversational AI, Expedia sees a future shaped by multiple tools, platforms and entry points.

That does not mean Expedia is staying outside the agent boom. The company is moving deeper into the ecosystem surrounding general-purpose AI assistants while continuing to build its own AI capabilities.

Expedia Is Joining Meta’s Muse

Expedia is expanding its presence inside emerging AI platforms, including Meta’s Muse. The move gives Meta’s personal AI assistant another route into travel planning while giving Expedia a way to stay visible even when travelers do not begin their search on an Expedia-owned platform.

This matters because Muse is not designed only for travel. It is a broader personal assistant that can help users complete different tasks, and travel is becoming one of them. That changes the competitive landscape because general-purpose AI agents can potentially influence travel decisions before a customer ever visits a traditional booking site.

Expedia therefore is not simply competing with AI assistants. It can also become part of the infrastructure those assistants use when travelers need hotels, flights and other travel services.

Expedia Does Not Expect One AI Agent to Control Everything

Expedia’s position becomes more interesting when it comes to the idea of a single all-powerful travel agent. Gorin has expressed skepticism that most travelers will eventually complete their entire trip through one end-to-end conversational experience.

Travel is usually more complicated than giving an assistant a single instruction and accepting whatever it returns. People compare hotels, share options with friends or family, change dates, revisit budgets and look through photos before making a decision. Those habits make travel different from simpler tasks that can be automated quietly in the background.

AI can still play a major role, but Expedia appears to believe that travelers will continue moving between conversational tools, visual interfaces, search results and booking platforms rather than relying on one agent for everything.

Expedia Has Already Moved Away From the All-in-One Agent Model

Expedia has already experimented with the idea of a more comprehensive AI travel assistant through Romie, a product intended to support travelers throughout different stages of a trip. The company’s current direction appears more modular.

Instead of expecting one assistant to manage every travel task, Expedia has increasingly focused on specialized AI agents that can handle narrower jobs. One system might interpret what a traveler wants, another might search accommodation, while another could help with itinerary building or customer support.

This approach gives Expedia more flexibility. Travel involves live inventory, changing prices, loyalty programs, payments, cancellation rules and customer service, so dividing those responsibilities among specialized systems may be easier to manage than putting everything into one enormous agent.

AI Is Giving Expedia Better Traveler Intent Data

One of the clearest benefits Expedia is seeing from conversational AI is richer customer data. Traditional travel searches often reveal only the basic details of a trip, such as location, dates and number of guests.

Natural-language conversations can reveal much more. A traveler might ask for a quiet beachfront hotel suitable for children, near restaurants, within walking distance of activities and below a specific budget. That gives Expedia a more detailed picture of what the customer is actually trying to find.

Gorin has said conversational interactions can provide Expedia with significantly more information about traveler intent. Even if AI has not yet produced a dramatic surge in bookings, it is already helping the company understand customers with greater precision.

Expedia Wants to Be Present Wherever AI Travel Searches Begin

Travel discovery is becoming less predictable as consumers begin asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Muse and other AI assistants where to stay or what to book. That creates a new distribution challenge for companies such as Expedia.

Instead of relying only on conventional search engines and direct app traffic, Expedia now needs its brands, inventory and travel information to appear inside AI-generated responses. This is why the company has been investing in answer engine optimization, or AEO, as another way to capture traveler attention.

The traditional booking funnel is becoming less linear. A traveler might discover a destination through social media, ask an AI assistant for recommendations, compare hotels on Expedia and then complete the reservation inside another interface. Expedia appears to be preparing for that fragmented journey rather than assuming customers will follow a single path.

Expedia Still Owns Important Pieces of the Travel Transaction

The rise of AI agents raises an obvious question for online travel agencies: if an AI assistant can search for hotels or flights, why would travelers still need Expedia?

Expedia’s answer lies in the operational layer behind the recommendation. The company connects travelers with a large inventory of accommodation and travel options while also handling payments, booking confirmation, customer service and fulfillment.

Finding a hotel is only one part of the process. Completing a reliable transaction and resolving problems after the booking can be much more complicated. Even if AI assistants take over more of the front-end discovery experience, established travel platforms may remain important behind the scenes.

General-Purpose AI Agents Still Represent a Major Competitive Shift

Expedia’s strategy does not remove the pressure created by general-purpose AI assistants. The more capable those systems become, the more influence they could gain over which travel options consumers see first.

That shift matters because a personal AI agent could potentially understand a user’s preferences, calendar, loyalty memberships and previous conversations before a traditional travel platform ever receives the search request.

Travel companies may therefore find themselves competing not only for consumer attention but also for visibility inside the AI systems that represent those consumers. The challenge becomes making inventory, pricing and brand information understandable enough for AI agents to confidently recommend and transact with.

The AI Travel Market Could Become More Fragmented

The most popular vision of agentic travel is simple: tell an AI where you want to go, allow it to research everything, and let it complete the booking. Expedia is betting that the real market will be more complicated.

Travel combines inspiration, visual comparison, personal preferences, negotiations and changing plans. Different AI systems may end up controlling different parts of the experience instead of one assistant taking over the full journey.

Expedia’s current direction reflects that possibility. The company is building its own specialized AI tools while also making its services available to outside platforms. That gives Expedia several ways to remain involved regardless of where the traveler begins.

The future of AI travel may therefore look less like one dominant digital travel agent and more like a network of assistants, marketplaces, airlines, hotels and technology providers working across the same customer journey.
