Just after sunrise on Saturday, a satellite set its long-range camera on the city of Mandalay in Myanmar, not far from the epicenter of Friday’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Southeast Asian country’s second-largest city. The mission was to capture images that, combined with artificial intelligence technology, could help relief organizations quickly assess how many buildings had collapsed or were heavily damaged and where helpers most needed to go. At first, the high-tech computer vision approach wasn’t working. “The biggest challenge in this particular case was the clouds,” said Microsoft’s chief data scientist, Juan Lavista Ferres. “There’s no way to see through clouds…
A new study has for the first time tested the use of an artificial intelligence powered eye scan in general practice clinics to screen patients for cardiovascular disease. Results of the research, published in npj Digital Medicine, found that the fast, non-invasive AI retinal scan could be readily integrated into primary care settings to screen for risk of heart attacks and stroke. “The ease of use of the retinal camera and high acceptance by doctors and patients demonstrates that it could be integrated into clinic workflow to screen patients before appointments with their GP,” says the study’s first author Wenyi Hu.…
The world is on the cusp of a new era of financial intelligence. While many factors contributing to this evolution of enterprise capabilities, the bulk of them a blend of technological and behavioral, few of the financial landscape’s innovations are as exciting for CFOs and treasury leaders as the emergence of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for the back office. While news broke Sunday (March 30) that Apple is working on an AI agent that can dispense health advice, it’s across enterprise areas like B2B payments and procurement where software systems designed to optimize various processes with minimal human intervention, from cash flow management…
The Ateneo Laboratory for Intelligent Visual Environments (ALIVE) and international researchers have developed a deep learning model that aims to revolutionize dentistry, with the capability to identify tooth and sinus structures in dental X-rays with an accuracy of 98.2%. Using a sophisticated object detection algorithm, the system was specifically trained to help quickly and more accurately detect odontogenic sinusitis—a condition that is often misdiagnosed as general sinusitis and, if left unchecked, could spread infection to the face, eyes, and even the brain. Odontogenic sinusitis, caused by infections or complications related to the upper teeth, is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Its…

High-precision metal components are crucial to manufacturing, yet programming CNC machining equipment remains a manual process. With a shortage of skilled workers [metal machine setters were among the top five most in-demand occupations in Europe in 2023] manufacturers are under pressure to streamline operations. Rising geopolitical tensions, cost concerns, and the shift towards regional supply chains further compound these challenges. ETH spin-off Manukai raised $3M [CHF2.645 million] in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round. The round was led by Swiss VC QBIT Capital and participated in by Bloomhaus Ventures, Innosuisse, and a group of angel investors. The investment will help fast-track the development of…
