Algeria has taken a step forward in its national artificial intelligence and digital transformation agenda, following a government meeting led by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb on May 25, 2026, to review progress on the country’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and approve the launch plan for the Dzair Digital Services portal.

The meeting highlighted Algeria’s commitment to modernizing public services and building a strong national AI ecosystem. Officials are already implementing the country’s AI strategy across six major pillars, while the Dzair platform has completed testing ahead of its expected launch.

Algeria Advances Its National AI Strategy

Algeria’s National AI Strategy focuses on six key areas: research, skills development, infrastructure, ecosystem growth, regulation, and AI use in sectors like health, agriculture, and energy.

The latest review shows Algeria is treating AI as a core part of national development. The strategy supports research, local talent, digital infrastructure, and AI adoption across major industries.

Algeria Approves Launch Plan for Dzair Digital Services Portal

Algeria has approved the launch plan for Dzair Digital Services, a government services portal that aims to reduce reliance on face-to-face, paper-based administration, in addition to reviewing the AI strategy.

The platform has gone through design, development, verification, cybersecurity testing and citizen pilot trials. Cybersecurity checks were performed in coordination with Algeria’s Information Systems Security Agency, or ASSI.

Between March and April 2026, pilot tests were conducted across seven ministerial sectors with over 1,700 participants. Citizens accessed documents and services on computers or mobile phones without visiting government offices.

At launch, Dzair Digital Services will offer 52 online public services. These services cover civil status, justice, health, land registry, and national solidarity. More services will be added gradually.

    Digital Identity and E-Wallet Features

The Dzair platform will also include a digital identity system and an electronic wallet. The digital identity feature was developed with Algeria’s Ministry of the Interior, while the e-wallet will allow users to store documents downloaded through the portal.

Algeria’s High Commission for Digitalisation, led by Minister and High Commissioner Meriem Benmouloud, developed the portal as part of the country’s 2025–2030 National Digital Transformation Strategy.

    Why It Matters

Algeria’s focus on AI strategy and digital government services reflects its plan to modernize the public sector. The Dzair portal could simplify access to government services, reduce delays, and support more data-driven public services in the future.

However, Algeria still faces challenges in execution. The country has strong computer science programs and growing AI research capacity. At the same time, it must address gaps in computing resources, data readiness, and investment.

The successful launch of the Dzair portal and the implementation of the National AI Strategy could position Algeria as one of Africa’s emerging digital economies.
