AirTrunk announced it will make one of the largest bets on AI infrastructure in India with plans to invest $30 billion in the country by 2030. The Blackstone-backed data center company will develop more than 5 gigawatts of new capacity. This move comes as demand for artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services surges across the region.

The investment positions India as a key growth market for next-generation AI infrastructure. As companies are racing to scale the computing power for large AI models and enterprise cloud workloads, India is increasingly becoming a strategic destination. Above all, the country now attracts hyperscale data center development.

AirTrunk Expands Its India AI Data Center Strategy

AirTrunk’s planned $30 billion investment follows its entry into the Indian market through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra. That deal gave the company an existing development pipeline of around 600 megawatts across major Indian cities. For example, these cities include Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

With the new commitment, AirTrunk is looking far beyond its initial footprint. The company plans to build data center capacity across multiple Indian states and union territories. This effort supports India’s ambition to become a global hub for cloud and AI infrastructure.

The company’s expansion comes amid increasing interest in India from global technology firms, cloud providers, infrastructure investors and AI companies. As AI use increases, demand for high-performance data centers is expected to increase sharply.

Why India is Emerging as a Big AI Infrastructure Market

There are a number of reasons why India is an attractive destination for substantial investment in AI data centers. The country boasts a fast-expanding digital economy and a large pool of technical talent. In addition, there is growing cloud adoption and increasing government support for AI development.

Government-backed initiatives like Digital India and IndiaAI Mission are aimed at strengthening the country’s tech ecosystem. These programs are meant to foster AI innovation, cloud computing, digital services and semiconductor development.

India is a fast growing domestic market and a potential global infrastructure base for companies like AirTrunk. Data centres in India could serve local businesses, multinational cloud providers, AI startups and enterprises looking for scalable computing power.

Gigawatt-Scale Data Centers Needed As AI Growth Continues

The rise of generative AI has altered the data center landscape. The training and deployment of sophisticated AI models demand tremendous computing resources, energy, cooling and custom infrastructure. Consequently, data center providers are designing larger campuses dedicated to AI and cloud workloads.

This shift is evident in AirTrunk’s proposed 5GW India buildout. Cloud providers and AI companies look for dependable, high-capacity facilities to meet future demand. Moreover, gigawatt-scale infrastructure grows in importance.

The investment also points to the importance of AI infrastructure becoming a mainstay of national digital strategies. Countries that can provide dependable power, land, connectivity and policy support can position themselves as desirable locations for global AI infrastructure investment.

Power, water and land are still key challenges

The AirTrunk India AI data center plan shows strong confidence in the market. However, large-scale data center development is not without hurdles. AI-centric data centers require substantial power, sustainable water access and large land parcels.

As India’s data center capacity is expected to expand, power availability could be one of the biggest constraints. Operators will have to provide reliable and affordable energy and increase the adoption of renewable power.

Sustainable development will also be key. As AI infrastructure grows, businesses will face increasing pressure to reduce their environmental footprints. Therefore, companies will need to improve cooling efficiencies and work closely with local communities.

AirTrunk’s Investment Could Power India’s AI Economy

AirTrunk claims its proposed 5GW data center expansion could support economic activity, job creation and local supply chain growth. Typically, big data center projects require construction workers, engineers, operations teams, energy partners and technology vendors.

In addition to direct employment, AI data centers can also attract cloud providers, AI developers, enterprise technology companies and digital service providers. This could boost India’s wider technology ecosystem. In the long run, it can help India’s long-term AI ambitions.

The announcement gives further momentum to India’s ambition to be a global hub for AI and cloud computing. For AirTrunk, it represents a significant milestone in its Asia-Pacific growth strategy. It is, above all, a strong vote of confidence in the future of India’s digital infrastructure.

What This Means for the AI Industry

AirTrunk’s $30 billion investment in India demonstrates the rapid pace at which AI is reshaping global infrastructure investment. As AI models increase in power and cloud demand continues to surge, data center capacity is emerging as one of the most vital foundations of the AI economy.

The country’s ability to support this growth will depend on infrastructure readiness, energy availability, regulatory support and sustainable development. If AirTrunk’s plan moves forward at scale, it could help make India one of the most important AI infrastructure markets in the world.

For now, the message is clear: the AI race is not only about software and models. This is also about creating the physical infrastructure to power the next generation of intelligent technology.
