Google has officially launched a new climate-focused AI accelerator program in the Asia-Pacific region. This program aims to help startups, researchers and nonprofits leverage artificial intelligence to solve pressing environmental problems.

The new initiative, called “AI for the Planet,” is a three-month accelerator created by Google DeepMind and Google’s regional teams. The program will support organizations working on climate technology, agriculture, energy, biodiversity, and environmental risk management across APAC.

Google Expands AI Beyond Productivity Tools

As competition in the AI industry intensifies, major tech companies are increasingly positioning AI as a solution for real-world global challenges. It is becoming more than just workplace automation.

Google says the accelerator is designed to help scale environmental innovations faster by giving selected participants access to mentorship and technical guidance. Participants will also receive advanced AI models from Google experts.

The accelerator begins with an in-person bootcamp in Singapore. It focuses on helping organizations integrate frontier AI technologies into their products and research.

Ben King, Google’s country managing director for Singapore and Malaysia, said the conversation around AI has evolved from simply scaling the technology. Now the focus is on intentionally applying it to solve global issues like climate change.

Why Asia-Pacific Matters for Climate AI

Google highlighted that Asia-Pacific is one of the world’s fastest-growing economic regions. However, it is also among the most vulnerable to climate change impacts such as flooding, extreme weather, food insecurity, and biodiversity loss.

The company believes AI could play a critical role in areas such as:

    • Renewable energy forecasting
    • Climate adaptation planning
    • Agricultural optimization
    • Disaster prediction and response
    • Sustainable resource management

Experts say smaller climate startups often struggle with access to advanced AI infrastructure and expertise. Google’s accelerator aims to bridge that gap.

    Google DeepMind Strengthens APAC Presence

The launch also reflects Google DeepMind’s growing investment in the Asia-Pacific AI ecosystem. The company recently expanded its regional operations, including opening research initiatives in Singapore and expanding support for local AI innovation.

The accelerator comes at a time when AI spending in the Asia-Pacific region is growing rapidly. Companies are looking at more ways to apply AI for sustainability and climate resilience.

The Increasing Conversation About AI and Sustainability

While AI is increasingly being touted as a tool for climate action, critics continue raising concerns about the technology’s own environmental impact. In particular, they highlight the energy consumption of large AI models and data centers.

Google’s new accelerator highlights the tech industry’s tightrope walk. Companies are deploying AI to combat climate risks, while also cutting the environmental footprint of AI itself.

For now, Google is betting that AI-driven climate innovation could become one of the most important use cases for the technology. This will be significant in the coming years.
