Pope Leo XIV has thrown artificial intelligence into the heart of global ethical debate with a powerful new Vatican manifesto calling for strict AI regulation and stronger protections for humanity in the digital age. The document, entitled Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”), is one of the Catholic Church’s strongest statements to date on the rapid rise of AI technologies.

In an 83-page manifesto, Pope Leo XIV warns that unchecked artificial intelligence could deepen inequality, fuel misinformation, automate warfare and weaken human relationships. He described AI as one of humanity’s greatest modern challenges and called on governments, technology companies and civil society to work together to ensure AI development serves the common good rather than corporate or political power.

Vatican Warns of AI Dangers in War and Human Rights

One of the most powerful sections of the manifesto focused on the growing use of AI in military systems. Pope Leo XIV warned against allowing autonomous technologies to make life-or-death decisions. He stressed that humans must remain responsible for any deadly action involving AI systems.

The Vatican also raised concerns about AI-powered surveillance, manipulation, and disinformation campaigns. According to the Pope, these technologies could weaken democracy and reduce public trust. He added that algorithm-driven digital platforms may turn people into passive consumers while damaging truth and critical thinking.

The manifesto also highlighted the risks of AI replacing human workers without proper protections in place. Pope Leo XIV compared today’s AI revolution to the Industrial Revolution. He argued that technological progress should never come at the cost of human dignity or social justice.

Anthropic Joins Vatican AI Ethics Discussion

The Vatican’s AI initiative gained additional attention because Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah participated in the launch event. Anthropic, one of the leading AI companies competing with OpenAI and xAI, has positioned itself as a company focused on AI safety and responsible development.

The partnership between the Vatican and Anthropic signals a growing intersection between religious institutions and major AI developers in shaping future AI governance. But Pope Leo XIV also criticized the concentration of AI power in the hands of large private corporations, saying that democratic oversight and public accountability are essential.

AI Regulation Debate Could Intensify Globally

The manifesto arrives during increasing global debate over AI regulation, especially as governments and tech companies race to deploy advanced AI systems across industries. Pope Leo XIV’s position contrasts sharply with more aggressive pro-growth AI policies seen in parts of the United States and other countries.

The Vatican has already been active in AI ethics discussions through initiatives like the Rome Call for AI Ethics, signed by several major technology companies in recent years. With Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV is positioning the Catholic Church as a major moral voice in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

As AI develops, so must the Vatican’s message: that innovation must be intrinsically human, transparent and ethically responsible, not the unrestrained exercise of technological power.
