UAE Firms Step Up AI Investments as Customer Expectations Move Faster

UAE companies are spending more on artificial intelligence, and recent UAE AI investments are reshaping how businesses approach technology, but customers are not exactly waiting politely for businesses to catch up.

A new SAP Engagement Index shows that firms in the UAE are improving their customer engagement capabilities. That is the good part. The harder part is less polished: many companies still struggle with fragmented data, disconnected teams, unused information, and systems that cannot respond quickly enough when customers expect answers now.

Not tomorrow. Not after three departments get involved. Now.

According to Khaleej Times, the research found that UAE businesses are investing heavily in AI and customer engagement tools as consumers demand faster and more personalised experiences. Still, the gap between what customers expect and what companies can actually deliver remains wide. (Khaleej Times)

UAE Companies Are Putting More Money Into AI

    The clearest signal is investment.

The SAP study found that 76% of businesses plan to invest in AI-powered customer engagement in 2026. The same percentage are also investing in omnichannel engagement technologies. That means companies are not only looking at AI as a back-office efficiency tool. They want it closer to the customer.

Sales. Marketing. Support. Personalisation. Follow-ups. Faster replies.

The reason is obvious enough. Customers now compare every digital experience with the best one they had yesterday. A bank app gets measured against an e-commerce platform. A telecom chatbot gets judged against a food delivery app. A brand email gets ignored if it feels like it was written for everyone and no one.

That pressure is forcing UAE firms to rethink how they use AI in customer engagement and marketing.

Customer Engagement Is Improving, But Not Fully Mature

The UAE performed strongly as a mid-maturity market for customer engagement, according to the SAP Engagement Index.

Around 73% of UAE marketers were classified as having a moderate level of customer engagement maturity in 2026. That is a notable increase from 58% one year earlier. At the same time, the share of low-maturity organisations fell to 12% from 23%.

    So yes, progress is happening.

But the ceiling is still far away. Only 15% of UAE marketers reached a high engagement maturity score. That number says more than the positive headline. Most firms are moving in the right direction, but only a smaller group has turned customer engagement into a properly connected business capability.

In plain language, many companies have the tools. Fewer have the system.

The Real Problem Is Data That Nobody Can Use

AI sounds powerful until it meets messy company data.

The SAP report found that more than half of surveyed enterprises cannot access and use real-time data. Another 64% are dealing with “dark data,” meaning information they collect but do not actually use. On top of that, 56% said their data is too unstructured to use effectively.

That is where the AI story becomes less glamorous.

A company can buy advanced tools. It can announce an AI strategy. It can add chatbots, dashboards, and automation platforms. But if customer data is scattered across departments, stuck inside old systems, or too messy to trust, the AI will not magically fix the experience.

It may just make the confusion faster.

Customers Are Losing Patience With Disconnected Experiences

    The frustration is already visible.

Globally, 66% of consumers said they are put off by disorganised experiences that force them to deal with multiple teams to solve one issue. Nearly half said most marketing emails they receive are irrelevant. Almost six in ten consumers said the overall experience matters more than the brand itself.

That last point should worry companies.

Brand loyalty is not dead, but it is weaker when the experience feels broken. Customers remember when they repeat the same complaint three times. They remember when a chatbot gives a generic answer. They remember when a company sends a promotional email while an unresolved support issue is still sitting open.

AI can help with that. But only if the company uses it across the full customer journey, not as a shiny add-on.

UAE Firms Need AI Across the Business, Not Just Marketing

One of the biggest gaps in the report is internal coordination.

Only about one-third of decision-makers believe departments such as sales, marketing, technology, and customer service are fully coordinated. That is a problem because customers do not care which department owns the issue.

    They only see the brand.

Balaji Balasubramanian, President and Chief Product Officer at SAP Customer Experience, said companies that connect customer, operational, and supply chain data are better positioned to meet changing expectations. The idea is simple, even if the execution is not: AI works better when the business itself is connected.

Marketing alone cannot carry the experience. Customer service cannot fix everything after the fact. IT cannot solve the problem if the business process remains messy.

    This has to be wider.

Why This Matters for the UAE’s AI Push

The UAE has made AI a major national priority, with strong government backing, enterprise adoption, and investment across digital services, infrastructure, and automation. That creates momentum. It also raises expectations.

Customers in the UAE are already used to fast digital services in banking, government platforms, retail, travel, and delivery. Once people experience speed in one sector, they start expecting it everywhere else.

That is why this SAP research matters. It shows that AI investment is rising, but investment alone is not the finish line.

The next stage is harder. Companies need cleaner data, better coordination, stronger governance, and AI systems that actually improve the customer experience rather than adding another layer of noise. That reflects the wider challenge of moving enterprise AI deployment in the UAE from experimentation into practical operations.

Not every business is ready for that.

AI Spending Is No Longer Enough

The easy part is saying “we are investing in AI.”

The difficult part is proving that customers feel the difference.

For UAE firms, the next test will not be how many AI tools they buy. It will be whether those tools can reduce friction, personalise communication, speed up service, and connect the teams behind the scenes.

Customers are already moving faster. Their expectations have already changed.

Now UAE businesses have to make sure their AI investments do more than look good in a strategy deck.
