Scaleway to Build AMD-Powered AI Supercomputer in Sweden, Expanding Europe’s AI Computing Capacity

French cloud provider Scaleway has announced plans to build an AMD-powered AI supercomputer in Sweden. This marks another step in Europe’s efforts to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure. Furthermore, it aims to reduce dependence on a handful of major computing providers.

The company announced the project on October 13, 2026, during its annual ai-PULSE conference in Paris. The system will use AMD Instinct MI355X graphics processors to support demanding AI workloads, including model training and inference.

The investment also gives AMD another opportunity to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in AI computing. For European businesses, the project could provide more choices when accessing high-performance computing services.

AMD Instinct MI355X Chips Will Power Scaleway’s New AI Supercomputer

Scaleway’s upcoming supercomputer will rely on AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, processors designed to handle intensive artificial intelligence workloads. These chips target applications such as large language model training, machine learning and AI inference. In these areas, computing performance and memory capacity are particularly important.

The company plans to integrate the processors with AMD’s ROCm software ecosystem, which supports widely used AI development frameworks. As a result, this approach could give developers more flexibility when building applications without relying entirely on Nvidia’s CUDA platform. AMD has been working to strengthen its position in the AI accelerator market. In addition, Scaleway’s investment provides another opportunity to demonstrate its technology in a commercial computing environment.

Sweden Becomes a Strategic Location for Scaleway’s AI Expansion

Sweden’s energy infrastructure and established technology sector helped make the country an attractive location for Scaleway’s latest investment. Large AI computing facilities consume substantial amounts of electricity. Therefore, access to reliable power is an important consideration when developing supercomputing infrastructure.

Sweden offers a largely low-carbon electricity mix, which could help Scaleway manage the environmental impact of its expanding operations. The country also has a growing AI ecosystem and strong demand for digital infrastructure. Scaleway previously entered the Swedish market through a partnership with telecommunications company Tele2 in May 2026. This established a foundation for its broader cloud and AI services in the region.

Scaleway Partners With Bull, HPE and Other Technology Companies

Scaleway is working with several technology companies to develop the AMD-powered supercomputer. French supercomputing specialist Bull will oversee system integration, deployment and maintenance. Meanwhile, Giga Computing will provide the servers needed to support the computing infrastructure.

HPE Networking will supply high-performance Ethernet networking technology. This will allow the processors and other components to exchange data efficiently. VAST Data will contribute its data platform, while Motul will provide specialised liquid cooling fluid to help manage the heat generated by intensive AI processing. These partnerships reflect the complexity of building large-scale computing systems. In such systems, networking, storage and cooling can be just as important as processor performance.

AMD Gains Another Opportunity to Challenge Nvidia in AI Computing

Nvidia continues to dominate the AI accelerator market. However, AMD has been expanding its presence among cloud providers and organisations developing high-performance computing infrastructure. Scaleway’s decision to deploy AMD Instinct processors highlights growing interest in alternative hardware solutions. This comes as demand for AI computing continues to increase.

The investment does not mean Scaleway is moving away from Nvidia entirely. The company has also announced plans to deploy a separate cluster using Nvidia B300 GPUs in Copenhagen, Denmark. By supporting multiple hardware architectures, Scaleway can offer customers different options. These options depend on computing requirements, software compatibility and operational budgets. This approach could become increasingly important as AI developers look for ways to manage infrastructure costs. Additionally, it can help avoid depending on a single technology supplier.

Europe’s AI Infrastructure Push Continues to Gain Momentum

Scaleway’s Swedish supercomputer forms part of a wider European effort to strengthen regional AI infrastructure. Governments, technology companies and cloud providers have been investing in computing resources. This is happening as artificial intelligence becomes more important to business operations, scientific research and digital services.

Access to powerful computing systems remains a challenge for some European AI startups, particularly those developing large models that require extensive processing capacity. Scaleway aims to address part of that demand by expanding its cloud infrastructure across Europe. The company is also preparing additional availability zones in Stockholm and Frankfurt for 2027. This will support its ambition to provide more computing resources within European markets.

Scaleway Expands Its European AI Computing Network

The Swedish project represents another stage in Scaleway’s expansion beyond France. The company is developing AI infrastructure across several European locations, including Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm. This development comes as Scaleway responds to growing demand for GPU-powered cloud services.

Its broader infrastructure strategy includes plans to deploy tens of thousands of GPUs and increase the computing capacity available to customers. However, Scaleway has not disclosed the exact number of AMD processors planned for the Swedish supercomputer or confirmed when the system will become commercially available. Those details will help determine how the new facility compares with other major AI computing projects in Europe.

What Scaleway’s AMD Supercomputer Means for European AI Developers

For European AI developers, Scaleway’s investment could create another option for accessing the computing resources needed to build, train and deploy artificial intelligence applications. Smaller technology companies often face challenges securing sufficient GPU capacity, particularly when demand from major AI developers places pressure on available infrastructure.

An additional commercial supercomputing service could give these businesses more flexibility when choosing cloud providers and managing workloads. The project may also strengthen competition among AI hardware suppliers, although its practical impact will depend on pricing, performance and customer availability. Scaleway’s decision to use AMD technology suggests that Europe’s expanding AI infrastructure market may increasingly support several competing computing architectures. This would be instead of relying on one dominant supplier.

Scaleway’s Swedish Supercomputer Signals Growing Demand for AI Infrastructure

Scaleway’s decision to build an AMD-powered AI supercomputer in Sweden reflects the growing importance of computing infrastructure in the artificial intelligence industry. As businesses develop more sophisticated AI applications, demand for powerful processors, reliable data centres and efficient networking systems continues to rise.

The project could strengthen AMD’s position in Europe’s commercial AI computing market while supporting Scaleway’s expansion across the region. Questions remain about the facility’s final capacity, launch schedule and commercial pricing. However, the investment adds another significant development to Europe’s AI infrastructure landscape.

For European companies looking to scale their AI operations, the most important outcome may be greater access to computing resources and more freedom to choose the technologies that support their applications.
