Amazon in Talks to Acquire AI Startup Decart for Around $7 Billion

Amazon is reportedly negotiating a deal to acquire artificial intelligence startup Decart for approximately $7 billion, a move that could strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the discussions center on Decart’s technology, which helps developers run artificial intelligence workloads more efficiently across different computing chips.

The potential acquisition comes as Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues investing in custom AI processors and cloud infrastructure. No final agreement has been announced, and the negotiations could still change or collapse.

Amazon Targets Decart to Expand Its AI Computing Capabilities

Amazon’s interest in Decart reflects a growing challenge across the artificial intelligence industry: the enormous cost of running increasingly sophisticated AI models.

Companies developing advanced AI systems rely heavily on specialized processors, particularly Nvidia GPUs. These chips provide the computing power needed for training and inference, but their high costs and limited availability have encouraged technology companies to explore alternatives.

Decart develops software designed to improve AI computing efficiency and make workloads more adaptable across different hardware platforms. Its expertise could complement Amazon’s efforts to reduce dependence on external chip suppliers.

AWS already offers its own Trainium processors, which compete for a share of the AI computing market. Bringing Decart’s technology into its infrastructure could help Amazon improve performance and make its custom chips more accessible to developers.

For businesses operating AI applications at scale, even modest improvements in computing efficiency can translate into significant savings.

Decart’s Rapid Growth Attracts Billion-Dollar Acquisition Interest

Decart has emerged as an increasingly valuable player in the AI industry despite being founded only in 2023.

The startup, established by Israeli engineers Dean Leitersdorf, Orian Leitersdorf and Moshe Shalev, has attracted investment from prominent venture capital firms, including Sequoia Capital, Benchmark and Radical Ventures.

According to reports, Decart has raised more than $400 million in funding. Its valuation approached $4 billion earlier in 2026, reflecting growing investor confidence in its technology and commercial potential.

A possible $7 billion acquisition would represent another substantial increase in the company’s value.

Investors have shown particular interest in AI startups developing technologies that improve infrastructure efficiency. As major technology companies expand their data centers and invest billions in computing hardware, software that can reduce operational expenses has become increasingly attractive.

Decart’s combination of infrastructure expertise and generative AI research places it in a competitive segment of the market.

Decart’s Lucy and Oasis Models Push AI Beyond Traditional Applications

While Decart’s infrastructure technology appears central to Amazon’s reported interest, the startup has also gained recognition for developing interactive AI world models.

Its projects include Lucy and Oasis, systems designed to generate and transform visual environments using artificial intelligence.

Unlike conventional generative AI applications that produce written responses or static images, world models aim to create environments that respond dynamically to changes and user interactions.

Decart’s Lucy technology has demonstrated real-time video transformation capabilities, allowing visual content to change as it is processed. Oasis explores AI-generated interactive environments, offering a glimpse of how generative models could influence gaming and digital experiences.

These technologies could eventually support applications in entertainment, advertising, virtual commerce and interactive media.

For Amazon, Decart’s research could provide opportunities beyond cloud computing, particularly in areas where real-time AI-generated content becomes commercially useful.

Amazon’s Existing Relationship With Decart Could Support the Deal

Amazon and Decart have already established a working relationship through AWS.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon previously gave Decart early access to its Trainium3 AI processor, allowing the startup to explore the hardware’s capabilities.

That collaboration is particularly relevant because Amazon has been working to establish Trainium as a competitive alternative to Nvidia’s widely used AI chips.

Developing powerful processors is only one part of that strategy. Amazon also needs software that allows developers to move workloads onto its hardware without creating unnecessary technical complications.

Decart’s expertise could help AWS address those challenges and improve how customers deploy AI models across different computing environments.

The relationship may also give Amazon greater familiarity with Decart’s engineering capabilities, although neither company has confirmed that the collaboration will lead to an acquisition.

Competition for Decart Highlights Growing Demand for AI Infrastructure Startups

Amazon’s reported negotiations follow earlier indications that several major technology companies have explored acquiring Decart.

Reports from Israeli technology publication Calcalist linked the startup to interest from companies including Nvidia, Amazon, SpaceX and Nebius.

Bloomberg also reported in August 2026 that Anthropic had discussed a potential acquisition of Decart valued at approximately $6 billion.

Those discussions illustrate the growing competition for companies developing specialized AI infrastructure and advanced generative models.

Large technology businesses increasingly view acquisitions as a way to obtain engineering expertise and accelerate development rather than build every capability internally.

Decart’s technology could appeal to companies pursuing different objectives, from optimizing AI hardware to developing interactive world models.

However, the existence of previous acquisition discussions does not guarantee that Amazon will complete the reported transaction.

A Potential $7 Billion Acquisition Could Strengthen Amazon’s Position Against Nvidia

Amazon has committed substantial resources to developing AI infrastructure, including custom processors, cloud computing services and investments in artificial intelligence companies.

Acquiring Decart could strengthen those efforts by adding software expertise that improves how AI workloads operate across different computing systems.

Nvidia continues to dominate the market for advanced AI accelerators, supported by its powerful hardware and established software ecosystem.

Amazon’s strategy involves providing customers with alternative computing options through AWS, particularly its Trainium processors.

Decart could help make those alternatives more practical by improving workload efficiency and reducing the technical barriers associated with using different chips.

That matters because companies deploying AI at scale are increasingly concerned about computing costs, infrastructure availability and dependence on individual hardware suppliers.

A successful acquisition would not immediately change Nvidia’s market position, but it could give Amazon another tool in its efforts to compete for AI workloads.

Amazon’s Decart Acquisition Talks Remain Uncertain

Despite the reported $7 billion valuation, Amazon and Decart have not announced a definitive acquisition agreement.

The negotiations could continue, another buyer could emerge, or the companies could decide against completing a transaction.

Questions also remain about how Decart’s technology would fit into Amazon’s broader AI operations and whether its world-model research would remain a separate development priority.

Still, the reported discussions highlight a notable shift in the artificial intelligence industry.

Companies are no longer competing solely to build larger models or acquire more powerful processors. They are also searching for ways to make AI computing faster, more flexible and less expensive.

Decart operates directly in that space.

If Amazon completes the acquisition, the deal could become an important addition to AWS’s efforts to expand its AI infrastructure business and challenge established hardware providers.

For now, the industry will be watching whether the reported negotiations result in a formal agreement.
