AI is eating power, land, cooling systems, chips, and capital all at once.

That is why the latest move from MGX, the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership, and BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners feels bigger than another corporate acquisition. The group has completed its $40 billion acquisition of Aligned Data Centers, giving the consortium control of one of the major data center platforms serving AI, cloud, hyperscale, and enterprise workloads.

This is not a chatbot story. It is not another model launch either.

It is the kind of infrastructure deal that shows where the AI race is really moving. Behind every new AI product sits a much less glamorous question: where will all this compute actually run?

MGX and Its Partners Close the Aligned Data Centers Acquisition

The consortium, made up of MGX, AIP, and BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners, has acquired 100 percent of Aligned Data Centers from private infrastructure funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management and its co-investment partners.

The transaction values Aligned at around $40 billion. That alone puts it among the largest private digital infrastructure deals tied to the AI boom.

The deal was first announced in 2025 and has now been completed. For the AI market, the timing is not random. Demand for data centers has exploded as companies build larger models, run heavier workloads, and move more AI systems into real business use.

Everyone wants AI. Fewer people talk about the buildings, electricity, cooling, and financing needed to keep it running.

That is exactly where this deal sits.

Aligned Gives the Consortium a Huge AI Infrastructure Footprint

Aligned Data Centers is not a small operator waiting to be scaled from scratch.

The company has 51 data center campuses and more than 6.4 gigawatts of operational and planned capacity, according to Gulf News. Its footprint covers major U.S. markets including Northern Virginia, Chicago, Dallas, Ohio, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City. It also has assets in São Paulo, Querétaro, and Santiago.

That matters because AI demand is not concentrated in one city or one cloud region anymore. Companies need compute closer to power, closer to customers, and closer to markets where digital services are growing fast.

Aligned gives the consortium a ready platform across North America and Latin America. Not theoretical land. Not just a pitch deck. Actual infrastructure, development pipelines, customer relationships, and power planning.

In the AI infrastructure race, that is gold.

Another $5 Billion Will Go Into Expansion

The acquisition is not the end of the spending.

MGX and its partners are also committing another $5 billion in growth capital to expand Aligned’s data center network and increase AI-ready capacity. That extra money will support new development, site redevelopment, workforce training, local job creation, and projects tied to power-grid resilience.

    That last part is important.

AI data centers are becoming deeply connected to energy policy. These facilities need enormous amounts of electricity. They also need advanced cooling systems, dependable grids, and long-term planning with utilities.

Aligned has built part of its identity around patented cooling technologies designed to reduce water use and improve energy efficiency. That becomes more valuable as AI facilities move toward denser workloads and hotter equipment.

The problem is simple. AI wants more compute. More compute needs more power. More power creates pressure on everything around it.

AIP Makes Its First Big Move

This acquisition is also the first completed investment by the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership.

AIP was created by BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners, MGX, Microsoft, and NVIDIA to help fund the next generation of AI infrastructure. The partnership is targeting $30 billion in equity commitments, with the potential to support up to $100 billion when debt financing is included.

That is a huge number. But AI infrastructure has started to operate at huge numbers.

Microsoft, NVIDIA, xAI, Kuwait Investment Authority, Temasek, Cisco, GE Vernova, and NextEra Energy are all connected to the broader AIP ecosystem in different roles. That mix says a lot about where AI is going. The future of AI does not only depend on software companies. It now depends on finance, sovereign capital, chipmakers, utilities, networking firms, and energy providers moving together.

    Messy? Yes.

    Necessary? Probably.

Why Abu Dhabi’s MGX Is Central to the Deal

MGX’s role makes the deal especially relevant for the Middle East AI market.

The Abu Dhabi-based technology investment company has been moving aggressively into AI and advanced technologies. Its investment focus includes semiconductors, infrastructure, software, life sciences, automation, and other sectors where AI can create large-scale economic impact.

By joining this acquisition, MGX is not only investing in data centers. It is helping shape the global compute layer that AI companies will rely on.

That fits Abu Dhabi’s wider push to become a major AI hub. The UAE has been building its position through cloud infrastructure, sovereign AI, data center projects, model development, and strategic partnerships with global technology players.

This deal gives MGX a seat at the table in one of the most important parts of the AI stack: infrastructure.

Not the shiny part. The expensive part.

Aligned Will Keep Its Existing Leadership

Aligned will continue to be headquartered in Dallas, Texas. CEO Andrew Schaap and the existing management team will remain in place.

That detail matters because big infrastructure acquisitions can easily disrupt operations. In this case, the consortium appears to be keeping Aligned’s operating structure intact while giving it deeper capital backing.

The goal is not to turn Aligned into something completely different overnight. The goal is to scale what it already does: build and operate high-density data center infrastructure for AI, cloud, hyperscale, and enterprise customers.

In plain language, the company now has bigger financial muscle behind it.

AI Is Becoming an Infrastructure Business

For years, AI headlines focused on models. GPT this. Claude that. Gemini, Grok, Llama, chips, benchmarks, context windows, agents.

    Those things still matter.

But the market is now being pulled toward a more basic bottleneck. Compute capacity. Power access. Data center campuses. Cooling. Fiber. Grid upgrades. Supply chains. Long-term energy contracts.

The MGX-led consortium’s $40 billion Aligned Data Centers deal shows that AI is no longer just a software competition. It is becoming an infrastructure race with sovereign funds, asset managers, chip companies, cloud giants, and energy firms all trying to secure their place.

That changes the tone of the AI boom.

The next major advantage may not come from who has the cleverest demo. It may come from who has the land, electricity, cooling systems, financing, and operational discipline to keep AI running at scale.

Less glamorous. Much harder to fake.
