McDonald’s Uses AI to Recommend Menu Prices as Algorithmic Pricing Expands

McDonald’s is bringing artificial intelligence into one of the most sensitive parts of the fast-food business: how much customers pay.

The restaurant giant is using machine-learning technology to recommend menu prices for individual locations, drawing on transaction data, local competition and estimates of what customers in a particular market may be willing to pay.

It sounds a lot like dynamic pricing. There is an important distinction, though.

McDonald’s says the technology does not automatically decide what a Big Mac costs. Instead, its pricing platform produces recommendations for restaurant operators, while franchisees retain responsibility for setting final menu prices. The system also operates at the restaurant level rather than calculating a different price for each individual customer.

AI Is Moving Into McDonald’s Pricing Decisions

The technology behind the system is machine learning rather than the generative AI used in tools such as ChatGPT. It processes restaurant transaction and pricing data, then looks for patterns that can help estimate an appropriate price for particular menu items at specific locations. Local competition also feeds into the process, alongside estimates of how customers in a particular market respond when prices change. According to reporting cited by AI News, McDonald’s has used forms of AI-assisted pricing technology for several years, gradually developing the approach into a proprietary recommendation platform for restaurant operators.

What makes this significant is the scale. McDonald’s processes enormous volumes of transaction data across its restaurant network, giving its systems a detailed view of purchasing habits, pricing behaviour and local differences. Instead of relying on broad national assumptions, the company can use machine learning to identify patterns at a much more granular level. Pricing is becoming another part of restaurant operations where data analysis can directly shape commercial decisions.

One Big Mac Can Cost More Just a Few Miles Away

Restaurant-level pricing already means McDonald’s customers can encounter noticeably different prices depending on location. Reuters reporting cited by AI News found that two company-operated McDonald’s restaurants in Fresno, California, located only a few miles apart, were charging different prices for a Big Mac. One listed the burger at $5.69, while another charged $6.89.

The reporting did not establish that McDonald’s AI pricing platform directly caused that particular price gap. Restaurants can face different rent, labour expenses, customer demand and competitive pressures, even when they operate in the same city. Still, the example shows why AI-assisted pricing attracts attention. A system that can analyse local conditions restaurant by restaurant may produce recommendations that vary significantly even across relatively small geographic areas.

The System Estimates What Local Customers May Pay

One of the more interesting parts of McDonald’s pricing system is its ability to estimate customer willingness to pay within a local market. Machine-learning models can examine historical transactions, price changes and purchasing patterns to identify how customers around a particular restaurant have responded when menu prices moved in the past.

That does not mean McDonald’s is assigning each customer a personalised price. The system described in the reporting works at the restaurant level rather than calculating a different menu price for individual people. There was also no indication that McDonald’s was using a specific customer’s personal data to create an individual price. That distinction matters because personalised pricing has become a separate concern for regulators, particularly when businesses use personal or behavioural data to estimate what an individual consumer might be willing to pay.

Franchisees Still Make the Final Call

McDonald’s operates through a huge franchise network, so pricing decisions do not simply come from one central corporate office. The company says around 90% of its US restaurants are independently owned and operated, while nearly 95% of McDonald’s restaurants globally are run by franchisees. Those operators remain responsible for setting final menu prices.

The AI platform therefore acts as a recommendation system rather than an automatic pricing engine. It can suggest what a restaurant might charge, but the franchisee has the final say. Reuters reporting, however, highlighted some disagreement around how those recommendations are experienced in practice. Some franchisees said they had felt pressure to follow suggested pricing, while McDonald’s maintained that operators remain free to make their own decisions. The company also reportedly tracks differences between recommended prices and the prices restaurants ultimately choose.

AI Pricing Is Starting to Attract More Scrutiny

Algorithmic pricing has become a broader regulatory issue as companies across multiple industries use software to help set prices. Regulators are increasingly interested in how those systems work, what data they use and whether they could affect competition or consumer fairness.

The US Federal Trade Commission has examined personalised pricing practices involving consumer information, while competition authorities have also scrutinised algorithmic pricing in sectors such as housing. The McDonald’s system described in current reporting is different because it provides restaurant-level recommendations and does not appear to assign individual customers personalised prices. Even so, it sits within a much larger shift toward automated and data-driven commercial decision-making.

McDonald’s AI Strategy Is Much Bigger Than Menu Prices

Pricing is only one piece of McDonald’s broader push into artificial intelligence. The company has been expanding its use of AI across restaurant operations, customer service, ordering and internal systems as part of its wider technology strategy.

McDonald’s has also explored AI-assisted drive-thru ordering and other forms of restaurant automation. Its broader McDonald’s > NEXT strategy includes digital engagement, restaurant modernisation and expanded use of intelligent systems designed to improve efficiency. The company is increasingly treating AI as infrastructure rather than a standalone experiment, with applications stretching across both customer-facing and back-office operations.

Pricing and Affordability Are Now Colliding

The timing is notable because McDonald’s is also trying to keep affordability at the centre of its brand. The company has expanded value-focused offers in the United States, including new low-cost menu options and meal deals designed to attract price-sensitive customers.

That creates an interesting tension. AI can help restaurant operators optimise prices based on demand, local competition and purchasing behaviour. Customers, meanwhile, increasingly expect transparency and consistency when they walk into a familiar global brand. As algorithmic systems become more involved in everyday pricing decisions, McDonald’s may have to explain not just how the technology works, but why prices can differ from one restaurant to another.

For the fast-food industry, this may be where AI becomes most visible. Not through robots in the kitchen or chatbots on an app, but through the number sitting next to a burger on the menu board.
