    Key Takeaways

    • Google Gemini AI now allows users to import memories and chat histories from other AI platforms, enhancing user transition.
    • The memory import feature generates a prompt for users to transfer their preferences and context, improving personalization.
    • Users can upload chat histories of up to 5GB, enabling them to continue conversations without starting over.
    • Google’s update emphasizes data portability, making it easier for users to switch AI tools while retaining their digital history.
    • This move promotes competition among AI providers, as retaining user history may influence future choices in AI assistants.

Google Gemini AI introduces memory and chat import tools

Google has launched new features in Gemini AI that allow users to import “memories” and chat histories from other AI platforms. This update is designed to remove one of the biggest barriers in switching AI assistants losing past conversations and personalized context. With these tools, users can now carry over their preferences, prior prompts, and interaction history into Gemini, creating a more seamless transition between platforms.

How Google Gemini AI memory import works

The new memory import feature enables users to transfer what an AI system already knows about them. Gemini generates a prompt that users can paste into another chatbot, which then produces a summary of stored preferences and context. This summary can be copied back into Gemini, instantly helping the system understand the user better. In addition, the chat history import tool allows users to upload exported conversations up to 5GB, so they can continue discussions without starting from scratch.

Google has also updated its terminology, rebranding “past chats” into “memory,” signaling a broader focus on long-term personalization. However, the feature is currently limited to desktop users with personal accounts and is not yet available for enterprise or younger users.

Why Google Gemini AI data portability matters

This update highlights a growing shift in the AI industry toward data portability and user flexibility. As people spend more time building detailed histories with AI assistants, switching platforms has traditionally meant losing valuable context. By addressing this issue, Google is reducing friction and making it easier for users to explore different AI tools without sacrificing their digital footprint.

The move also intensifies competition among AI providers, as the ability to retain and transfer user history becomes a key differentiator. In the long run, this could reshape how users choose AI assistants—prioritizing convenience, continuity, and control over their own data.
