Google Brings New AI Study Tools to Search, Lens and AI Mode

Google is turning Search into something that looks increasingly like a built-in study assistant.

On August 19, 2026, the company announced a batch of new Google AI study tools aimed at students heading into the new school year. They stretch across Search, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Google Lens, and the idea is pretty straightforward: less jumping between apps, more studying directly inside Google. Some of the additions are small. Others change what people might expect a search engine to do.

Google Search can now generate interactive learning experiences, build practice quizzes, help students work through problems captured with a phone camera and organize course material inside notebooks. AI Mode can even turn uploaded notes and class files into new study documents. That is quite a jump from typing a question into a search box and opening ten blue links.

    1. Search Can Generate Interactive Visuals for Difficult Concepts

Google says Search can now create custom interactive tools and simulations inside AI Overviews.

A student trying to understand the pH scale, for example, might search for the topic and receive an interactive visual instead of only a written explanation. They can then push the idea further in AI Mode with a more specific request, such as plotting different citrus fruits along the scale. The interesting part here is customization.

A textbook diagram has to work for everyone. An AI-generated visual can be created around the exact question someone happens to be stuck on. Google says its generative UI capabilities are available globally in English through AI Mode and are beginning to appear in AI Overviews as well.

    2. Practice Quizzes Are Moving Directly Into Google Search

Search is also getting customizable practice quizzes. Students can request quizzes covering subjects such as science, mathematics, humanities and foreign languages. Google is supporting preparation for standardized exams including the ACT, AP, GRE, LSAT, MCAT and SAT, along with exams such as ENEM, JEE and NEET.

These aren’t supposed to be simple lists of automatically generated questions. Google says the feature uses material from education partners including The Princeton Review, Careers360, PhysicsWallah and Akira Enem. Answers can include explanations and links for additional learning.

A student could type something as specific as a request for a vocabulary quiz based on commonly tested SAT words and immediately start working through it. The quizzes are available globally in English at no charge through both AI Overviews and AI Mode.

    3. Google Lens Will Look at Your Work and Help Find the Mistake

This is probably one of the features students will notice fastest. Google Lens is getting an interactive learning experience that lets users photograph the problem they’re working on. Search can then provide an AI Overview explaining the concept, identifying possible mistakes and helping the student figure out what to do next.

Instead of taking a photo and receiving only an answer, Google is positioning Lens more like a tutor that looks at the work already on the page. Students will also be able to continue asking follow-up questions through AI Mode.

Google says the updated Lens learning experience will begin rolling out globally in English over the coming weeks. There is an obvious tension here. A tool capable of spotting mistakes can help someone understand a problem, but it can also make it very easy to outsource the thinking. Much will depend on how students actually use it.

    4. Gemini Notebook Is Moving Into AI Mode

Google is also pulling its notebook experience deeper into Search. Gemini Notebook, previously known as NotebookLM, can now connect with AI Mode. Students can create notebooks for individual courses or projects and fill them with material such as lecture slides, syllabi, websites and previous AI Mode conversations.

Once the sources are there, students can ask questions based specifically on those materials rather than relying on a completely open-ended AI response. Existing notebooks created through Gemini Notebook or Gemini can also appear inside Search, with sources and instructions synchronized across Google’s products.

Notebooks in AI Mode are rolling out across more than 180 countries in English, although Google notes that availability excludes the European Economic Area. Additional language support is expected later.

Google clearly wants these tools to feel less like separate products. Search something. Save material. Ask questions. Return to it later. The borders between Search, Gemini and Notebook are getting fuzzier.

    5. AI Mode Can Turn Class Materials Into Study Files

Maybe the most unusual announcement is file creation. Students can upload material such as handwritten notes and lecture slides, then ask AI Mode to turn those sources into something new. Google gives the example of generating a one-page document summarizing the key ideas from uploaded course material.

The feature isn’t limited to basic text summaries either. Google says AI Mode can create documents, presentations, spreadsheets and text files using uploaded material or previous AI Mode conversations. The capability has already rolled out globally in English and is expected to reach AI Overviews later.

For students, that could mean spending less time reorganizing notes. It could also mean a flood of AI-generated study guides that look polished while still needing to be checked carefully against the original material.

Google Search Is Becoming Less Like Search

That may be the bigger story underneath Google’s back-to-school announcement. Search used to point people toward information. Increasingly, Google wants Search to do something with that information before the user ever leaves the page.

A query can become a simulation. Notes can become a study guide. A photo of unfinished homework can become an interactive tutoring session. Course files can become a searchable notebook. For students, the convenience is obvious.

For Google, these features also make AI Mode much more difficult to describe as simply another way to search the web. It is becoming an environment where people can research, organize, generate and learn without leaving Google’s ecosystem. That broader shift fits with Google’s wider effort to make Gemini more useful across everyday workflows, including coding, agentic tasks and productivity tools.

The new school year gives Google a convenient moment to introduce the features. The longer-term question is bigger: if students grow accustomed to having Search explain, quiz, organize and generate their study material, what exactly does a search engine become?
