Deutsche Telekom Targets €2.5 Billion in AI and Automation Savings by 2030

Deutsche Telekom is putting a hard number on what artificial intelligence could mean for its bottom line.

The German telecommunications group expects AI and automation to deliver around €2.5 billion in indirect cost savings by 2030, compared with its 2023 cost base. The target was outlined as Deutsche Telekom presented its AI strategy to investors, moving the conversation away from experimentation and toward measurable business returns.

There is a revenue angle as well. Deutsche Telekom wants AI-related revenue from business customers outside the United States to rise from roughly €250 million in 2026 to around €800 million by 2030.

The message is becoming difficult to miss. AI is no longer being treated as a side project. It has to produce savings, revenue or both.

€2.5 Billion Savings Target Puts AI Under Financial Pressure

Deutsche Telekom plans to use AI and automation across network operations, customer service, software development and administrative work. These are areas where repetitive processes still consume significant time and manpower, making them obvious targets for automation.

By 2027, the company expects around €1.1 billion in gross savings outside the United States, measured against its 2023 cost base. Its longer-term goal stretches much further, with indirect cost savings expected to reach approximately €2.5 billion by 2030.

Not all of those savings will simply feed into profit. Deutsche Telekom has indicated that some of the efficiency gains will help finance its wider digital transformation and continued investment in Germany’s fiber-optic network.

That makes the strategy slightly different from a straightforward cost-cutting exercise. AI is being used to remove expense, but some of the money released in the process will be redirected into infrastructure and future technology.

Customer Service Is Already Becoming an AI Operation

Customer support gives Deutsche Telekom one of its clearest opportunities to turn AI into immediate operational savings. Large telecom operators handle millions of customer interactions, many involving repetitive questions, routine account issues or predictable troubleshooting steps.

The company’s Frag Magenta chatbot handled around 2.6 million customer-service calls during the first half of 2026. In the United States, Deutsche Telekom says customer-service call volumes have fallen sharply, while AI agents now manage a significant share of customer contacts.

AI is also being used alongside human service staff rather than only replacing front-line interactions. Systems can surface relevant information while an employee is speaking with a customer, summarize conversations and document cases automatically.

The company has also deployed AI to identify problems during new connection processes. Deutsche Telekom says some of these applications have helped reduce complaints by around 30%, showing how automation can affect service quality as well as staffing costs.

AI Is Moving Deeper Into Deutsche Telekom’s Networks

Some of Deutsche Telekom’s most interesting AI applications sit behind the scenes, inside the network itself. These systems will rarely be noticed by customers, but they could have a much larger effect on reliability and operating costs.

The company’s RAN Guardian Agent monitors mobile networks for congestion and other emerging performance issues. That can become especially useful during major events, when sudden increases in traffic can put pressure on local network capacity.

Deutsche Telekom says the system can identify problems and support a response in roughly one minute, compared with processes that previously took considerably longer. Faster intervention can reduce disruption while also limiting the amount of manual network management required.

AI-assisted software development is another area the company is targeting. Deutsche Telekom is gradually spreading AI tools across IT, sales, administrative functions and network operations rather than confining them to a single innovation team.

Deutsche Telekom Wants AI Revenue as Well as Savings

Cutting costs is only one side of Deutsche Telekom’s AI plan. The company also wants to sell more AI-powered products and infrastructure to business customers.

Deutsche Telekom expects around €250 million in AI-related business revenue outside the U.S. in 2026. By 2030, it wants that figure to reach roughly €800 million, giving AI a more visible place inside its commercial growth strategy.

Part of that opportunity is tied to Europe’s push for greater control over digital infrastructure and data. Deutsche Telekom is positioning its European cloud and computing infrastructure as an option for companies and public institutions that want to run AI workloads while retaining tighter control over where sensitive information is stored and processed.

Its Industrial AI Cloud in Munich forms part of that effort. The infrastructure is designed to support demanding industrial applications, including simulations, data-heavy workloads and AI systems used by manufacturing and engineering companies.

The company is also targeting smaller businesses with AI services designed to automate routine work. Its Voice AI Notes service, for example, can generate summaries of business calls and reduce the amount of manual note-taking required after customer conversations.

AI Agents Become Part of the Enterprise Strategy

Deutsche Telekom is also pushing deeper into agentic AI, where software systems do more than generate answers. AI agents can connect to business applications, retrieve information and carry out defined tasks inside existing workflows.

The company’s T-AI platforms are designed to help businesses deploy and manage these agents. Smaller and mid-sized companies can use agent-based tools for recurring processes, while larger organizations can manage more complex deployments across different systems.

For enterprises, the challenge will not simply be creating individual AI agents. Companies may eventually have dozens or hundreds of agents operating across CRM platforms, email systems, finance tools and internal databases.

That creates a governance problem. Businesses need to know what each agent can access, what actions it can perform and who remains responsible when something goes wrong. Deutsche Telekom is positioning its orchestration tools as part of the answer.

More Than 100,000 Employees Have Received AI Training

Deutsche Telekom’s AI strategy also relies heavily on its workforce. The company says it has already trained more than 100,000 employees in AI. Staff can also use internal AI systems, ChatGPT Enterprise and Microsoft Copilot as part of their daily work.

The approach suggests Deutsche Telekom does not expect AI adoption to happen automatically just because the tools are available. Employees still need to understand how to use them, where they are useful and when human judgment needs to take over.

The company continues to emphasize human responsibility in the decision-making process. Employees can use AI to retrieve information, draft material, automate routine steps and support analysis, but people remain accountable for the final outcome.

That may prove important as AI becomes embedded across more departments. The technology becomes more valuable when it is connected to everyday workflows, but the risks also become more difficult to isolate.

Deutsche Telekom Is Turning AI Into a Business Metric

Telecommunications companies have talked about AI for years, often in broad terms. Deutsche Telekom is now attaching much more specific financial targets to the technology.

The numbers are substantial. The company is targeting €2.5 billion in indirect cost savings by 2030, wants AI-related business revenue outside the U.S. to reach around €800 million, and has already trained more than 100,000 employees in the use of AI tools.

That makes the strategy easier to measure.

The next few years will show whether Deutsche Telekom can convert widespread AI deployment into the productivity gains it expects. Customer service, networks, administration and enterprise software are all being pulled into the same transformation.

For a telecom operator with enormous infrastructure costs and millions of customer interactions, even relatively small efficiency gains can add up quickly. Deutsche Telekom is betting they will add up to billions.
