Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), especially large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and open-source counterparts, are reshaping how people communicate daily. These AI systems generate human-like text, answer questions clearly, and even help automate customer service tasks. But now, scientists have found a surprising new use for AI chatbots: securely sending secret messages that can’t be detected by cybersecurity systems. A recent study, posted on the scientific database arXiv, introduced a novel method that turns AI-generated text into hidden carriers for encrypted messages. This innovative approach offers a crucial alternative for secure communication, especially as governments worldwide seek ways to detect,…

Businesses are turning to artificial intelligence tools to help them navigate real-world turbulence in global trade. Several tech firms told CNBC say they’re deploying the nascent technology to visualize businesses’ global supply chains — from the materials that are used to form products, to where those goods are being shipped from — and understand how they’re affected by U.S. President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. Last week, Salesforce said it had developed a new import specialist AI agent that can “instantly process changes for all 20,000 product categories in the U.S. customs system and then take action on them” as needed, to help navigate changes…

Artificial intelligence continues to be the thing in tech—whether consumers are interested or not. What strikes me most about generative AI isn’t its features or potential to make my life easier (a potential I have yet to realize); rather, I’m focused these days on the many threats that seem to be rising from this technology. There’s misinformation, for sure—new AI video models, for example, are creating realistic clips complete with lip-synced audio. But there’s also the classic AI threat, that the technology becomes both more intelligent than us and self-aware, and chooses to use that general intelligence in a way that does not benefit humanity.…
OpenAI is updating the AI model powering Operator, its AI agent that can autonomously browse the web and use certain software within a cloud-hosted virtual machine to fulfill users’ requests. Soon, Operator will use a model based on o3, one of the latest in OpenAI’s o series of “reasoning” models. Previously, Operator relied on a custom version of GPT-4o. By many benchmarks, o3 is a far more advanced model, particularly on tasks involving math and reasoning. “We are replacing the existing GPT‑4o-based model for Operator with a version based on OpenAI o3,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post. “The API version [of Operator] will remain…
One of Microsoft’s latest AI models can accurately predict air quality, hurricanes, typhoons, and other weather-related phenomena, the company claims. In a paper published in the journal Nature and an accompanying blog post this week, Microsoft detailed Aurora, which the tech giant says can forecast atmospheric events with greater precision and speed than traditional meteorological approaches. Aurora, which has been trained on more than a million hours of data from satellites, radar and weather stations, simulations, and forecasts, can be fine-tuned with additional data to make predictions for particular weather events. AI weather models are nothing new. Google DeepMind has released a handful over the past…
Hybrid data platform company Cloudera announced the latest release of Cloudera Data Visualization that extends its AI capabilities for on-premises environments. The offering is an AI tool designed to democratize insights across the data lifecycle, enabling data engineers, business analysts, and data scientists to seamlessly communicate, collaborate, and share insights, without compromising data security or governance – all through the common language of visualization. Enterprises often struggle to appropriately visualize data due to silos across multiple platforms, complex integrations, and data governance limitations. Without a unified view, data visualization can be incomplete or misleading, often resulting in ineffective decision-making. Cloudera…
Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab shares jumped 4% on Thursday, rising for a second straight day, as investors cheered the Google parent’s artificial intelligence updates including the rolling out of “AI Mode” to all its U.S. users. A $249.99-a-month subscription for its AI power users, teased at its annual developer conference, also allayed concerns over funding the huge costs of the company’s AI development. Sebastian Siemiatkowski is leaning all the way into the idea that his buy-now-pay-later, IPO-bound startup Klarna is an AI company. When Klarna delivered updated quarterly earnings on Monday, it was his AI avatar (pictured above) that presented the highlights, according to the company’s YouTube video. Other than AI Siemiatkowski’s admission, it wasn’t obvious that this was AI. There were only a few subtle signs: AI Siemiatkowski didn’t blink as much as most humans do. The voice sync was good, but not perfect. The AI was also wearing a brown jacket that looked a lot like the one from a widely circulated corporate…
