AMD is making one of its biggest AI moves yet.
The chipmaker has agreed to acquire World Labs, the spatial intelligence company co-founded and led by AI pioneer Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion.
Announced on September 28, 2026, the deal is about more than adding another AI company to AMD’s portfolio. AMD is bringing frontier model research directly inside the company as it works out what the next generation of AI infrastructure will actually need.
That increasingly means workloads beyond large language models. Robotics, simulation, 3D environments and physical AI all place different demands on computing systems, and World Labs has been building directly in that territory.
World Labs Brings Spatial Intelligence Research Into AMD
World Labs focuses on what it calls spatial intelligence — AI systems designed to understand, generate, reason about and interact with virtual and physical environments. The company was founded by Fei-Fei Li alongside Justin Johnson, Ben Mildenhall and Christoph Lassner, bringing together backgrounds in computer vision, graphics, machine learning and generative AI. Its work sits in a part of artificial intelligence that looks beyond text generation and instead tries to give models a stronger understanding of space, objects, movement and environments.
That research has obvious implications for robotics, simulation and physical AI. A system that needs to move through a warehouse, manipulate an object or understand a changing 3D scene has to process far more than language. It needs perception, spatial reasoning and some sense of how the physical world behaves. AMD sees those emerging workloads as an important part of future AI computing.
AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su said the company wants to understand how advanced AI models are evolving while it develops the compute platforms that will eventually run them. Bringing World Labs into AMD gives its engineering teams closer access to researchers building the kinds of models that could shape future hardware requirements.
Marble Shows What World Labs Is Already Building
World Labs is not operating purely as a research lab. The company has already introduced Marble, a generative world model designed to create persistent and spatially coherent 3D environments from inputs such as text, images, video, 360-degree panoramas and existing 3D layouts.
The technology allows users to move through, edit, expand and combine generated environments instead of simply producing a flat image or short video clip. That distinction matters because world models are intended to create spaces that AI systems can continue to reason about and interact with over time.
Applications could eventually stretch across robotics training, simulation, design, scientific research, gaming and immersive media. World Labs has also expanded further into robotics, including its acquisition of SceniX in 2026 as part of its work around simulation and spatial intelligence for robotic systems.
AMD Was Already an Investor in World Labs
The acquisition did not begin from a cold start. AMD had already invested in World Labs before agreeing to buy the company outright.
World Labs announced a $1 billion funding round in February 2026, with AMD listed among the investors alongside Autodesk, Emerson Collective, Fidelity Management & Research Company, NVIDIA and Sea. That earlier investment placed AMD close to the company’s development at a time when world models were gaining more attention across robotics and physical AI.
The move from investor to acquirer suggests AMD sees spatial intelligence as strategically important rather than simply experimental. As AI systems expand into environments where perception, simulation and real-time interaction matter, the underlying compute architecture may need to evolve with them.
That creates a direct incentive for a chipmaker like AMD to understand those workloads before they become mainstream.
Fei-Fei Li Will Become AMD Chief Scientist
The deal also brings one of the best-known figures in modern computer vision directly into AMD.
Following completion of the acquisition, Fei-Fei Li will become executive vice president and chief scientist at AMD, reporting to Lisa Su. The World Labs team is expected to continue its advanced AI model research inside the company.
Li is widely known for her work on ImageNet and for helping push computer vision into the modern deep-learning era. Her move into AMD gives the chipmaker a much stronger research presence at a time when hardware companies are becoming more involved in the development of AI models themselves.
It also creates a tighter connection between frontier AI research and AMD’s work across GPUs, CPUs, networking, software and rack-scale systems. Instead of waiting for new model architectures to emerge and then adapting hardware around them, AMD can now observe those changes much earlier from inside its own research organization.
AMD Is Building Beyond the GPU
AMD’s strategy has steadily expanded beyond selling individual accelerators. The company is positioning itself as a broader AI infrastructure provider, combining Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, networking, software and rack-scale systems into a more complete platform.
That approach becomes even more relevant as AI workloads diversify. Training and serving large language models remains a huge market, but physical AI introduces a different set of computing problems. Robots and autonomous systems may need to process visual information, simulate environments, make decisions and respond to physical surroundings in real time.
World Labs gives AMD direct exposure to those requirements.
The relationship between model design and chip design could become especially important if spatial models grow into a major AI workload. AMD would no longer be looking at those systems purely from the outside. Its own researchers would be building them.

AMD said the acquisition is structured as an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion.
The company expects the deal to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. World Labs is expected to continue its research into spatial intelligence and advanced AI models after joining AMD.
For AMD, the acquisition is a bet on where artificial intelligence is heading rather than where it is today. Language models still dominate much of the AI industry, but robotics, world models and physical AI are pulling more research toward systems that need to understand and interact with three-dimensional environments.

AMD’s AI Strategy Is Moving Closer to the Model Layer
The World Labs deal also signals something broader about AMD’s ambitions. Hardware companies are no longer staying entirely beneath the model layer. NVIDIA has built deep software and AI research capabilities around its chips, while cloud providers are designing custom silicon alongside their own models and AI platforms.
AMD is now moving further in that direction.
Owning a frontier AI research group gives the company another way to influence how its future compute systems are designed. The feedback loop between researchers building new models and engineers developing new hardware could become one of the most valuable parts of the acquisition.
World Labs may therefore matter to AMD for reasons that go beyond its current products. The larger prize is understanding what future AI systems will demand before the rest of the market gets there.
