Germany is making a major push into industrial artificial intelligence, with NVIDIA emerging as a key technology partner in the country’s effort to modernise manufacturing and strengthen its position in the global AI economy.

The German federal government and NVIDIA signed a Joint Declaration of Intent in Berlin on October 19, 2026, outlining plans to accelerate the development and adoption of advanced AI technologies across industrial sectors.

The announcement came during the Invest in Germany Summit, where German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang to discuss the future of AI-powered manufacturing, robotics and advanced computing.

At the centre of the agreement is a shared ambition to combine Germany’s industrial expertise with NVIDIA’s AI computing technology. Both sides want to develop practical applications that help factories, machines and autonomous systems operate more intelligently.

The partnership also builds on NVIDIA’s cooperation with Germany’s Industry 4.0 Platform, which connects government institutions, businesses and research organisations working on industrial digitalisation.

Germany Aims to Strengthen Its Position in Industrial AI

Germany has long been recognised for its engineering expertise, automotive production and advanced manufacturing capabilities. Artificial intelligence is now becoming an important part of the country’s strategy to maintain that competitive advantage.

The agreement with NVIDIA focuses heavily on physical AI, a technology that enables machines and robotic systems to interpret information from their surroundings and respond to real-world conditions.

For manufacturers, this could mean production equipment that adjusts to changing requirements, robots capable of handling more complex tasks and AI systems that support engineers in making faster operational decisions.

The German government sees these developments as an opportunity to strengthen domestic industries while expanding the country’s role in Europe’s AI ecosystem.

Chancellor Merz has emphasised the importance of turning Germany’s existing industrial strengths into an advantage in emerging technologies. The country already possesses considerable manufacturing expertise, but integrating AI into production will require stronger cooperation between technology providers, researchers and industrial businesses.

NVIDIA Wants to Unlock the Value of Germany’s Industrial Data

One of the most important aspects of the Germany NVIDIA industrial AI partnership involves the enormous amount of industrial data generated by German manufacturers.

Factories have spent decades collecting information about production processes, machinery performance, engineering specifications and equipment maintenance. Much of that data remains underused, even though it could help train AI systems for specialised industrial applications.

NVIDIA believes this information could support the development of AI models that understand how machines operate and how industrial environments change.

During discussions in Berlin, Merz encouraged Germany’s small and medium-sized businesses, known as the Mittelstand, to recognise the potential value of their industrial data.

These businesses play a major role in Germany’s economy, particularly in specialised manufacturing and engineering.

For smaller companies, however, adopting advanced AI is not always straightforward. Many lack the computing infrastructure, technical expertise or financial resources needed to develop sophisticated systems independently.

The cooperation with NVIDIA could help address some of those challenges by giving manufacturers access to advanced AI technologies and development platforms.

NVIDIA Plans to Support Four German Technology Startups

NVIDIA’s commitment to Germany extends beyond government cooperation. The company also announced plans to invest in four German startups developing technologies across robotics, healthcare, digital media and aerospace.

Munich-based Agile Robots is among the companies identified for investment. It develops intelligent robotic systems designed to support manufacturing, logistics and other industries that require sophisticated automation.

Another Munich company, Avelios Medical, focuses on AI-native hospital information systems. Its technology aims to improve how healthcare organisations manage clinical information and administrative processes.

Mirelo, which specialises in generative AI for audio production, is also included in NVIDIA’s investment plans. The company develops technology for generating sound effects, speech and music for video content.

Berlin-based Reflex Aerospace completes the group. It works on satellite design and manufacturing, with a focus on making spacecraft development more efficient.

These planned investments form part of NVIDIA’s broader commitment of nearly $10 billion to Europe’s AI ecosystem, including startups, universities and research institutions.

The company has not disclosed the individual investment amounts for the four German businesses. Still, the selection demonstrates NVIDIA’s interest in supporting AI applications across industries rather than concentrating exclusively on computing infrastructure.

Siemens and NVIDIA Expand Their Work on Autonomous Factories

German industrial technology company Siemens is also strengthening its relationship with NVIDIA as both companies explore how artificial intelligence can transform factory operations.

Siemens recently showcased AI-driven manufacturing technologies at its Erlangen factory, presenting the facility as an example of how increasingly autonomous production environments could operate.

The demonstrations focused on virtual production planning, digital simulations and intelligent systems capable of helping manufacturers manage complex industrial processes.

According to Siemens, fully virtual production ramp-ups could reduce engineering effort by up to 85%. The company also reported that agent-based production planning could lower costs by as much as 20%.

These figures come from Siemens and have not been independently verified as industry-wide benchmarks. Nevertheless, they illustrate the potential commercial benefits of applying AI to manufacturing.

Instead of relying entirely on traditional production planning methods, factories could use digital simulations to identify problems before making changes to physical equipment.

AI-powered systems could also support production scheduling, equipment monitoring and operational adjustments, potentially reducing downtime and improving efficiency.

For manufacturers facing rising operating costs and increasing global competition, these applications could become particularly valuable.

Physical AI Could Change How Industrial Machines Operate

Physical AI is emerging as one of the most important areas of artificial intelligence development, particularly for industries that depend on machinery, robotics and complex production environments.

Unlike generative AI systems that primarily create digital content, physical AI enables machines to interpret information from their surroundings and make decisions that affect real-world operations.

A factory robot, for example, could use AI to recognise unfamiliar objects, adjust its movements or respond to changes along a production line.

Autonomous vehicles could apply similar capabilities to navigate complex environments, while industrial equipment could use intelligent systems to improve performance and detect potential operational issues.

Germany’s established manufacturing sector provides an important foundation for developing these technologies.

NVIDIA contributes computing infrastructure, simulation platforms and AI models that researchers and manufacturers can adapt for specialised industrial applications.

The German government’s initiative also places particular emphasis on specialised open AI models, including technologies based on NVIDIA Nemotron and NVIDIA Cosmos.

These tools could support the development of industrial AI applications while allowing German companies and research institutions to build solutions suited to their own requirements.

NVIDIA Highlights Advanced Quantum Computing Research in Germany

The Berlin announcements also included developments in advanced computing research, with NVIDIA highlighting work conducted using JUPITER, a European supercomputer located at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

NVIDIA researchers used the system to simulate a fault-tolerant quantum computer containing 104 qubits, demonstrating the role of powerful classical computing infrastructure in advancing quantum research.

The achievement involved simulating quantum computing behaviour rather than operating a physical 104-qubit fault-tolerant quantum computer.

Although the research is separate from the industrial AI declaration, it reflects NVIDIA’s wider efforts to support advanced computing technologies in Europe.

Quantum computing research could eventually contribute to areas such as materials science, industrial optimisation and scientific modelling.

For Germany, investments in computing infrastructure and research capabilities may also help strengthen the technological foundation needed to support future industrial AI development.

Germany Faces Challenges in Bringing AI Into Everyday Manufacturing

The agreement with NVIDIA represents an important development for Germany’s technology ambitions, but transforming industrial operations will require more than access to advanced AI systems.

Many manufacturers still rely on older equipment, established production processes and software platforms that were not originally designed to support artificial intelligence.

Integrating new AI technologies into these environments can be expensive and technically demanding.

Smaller businesses may face additional difficulties because they often lack dedicated AI specialists or the computing resources available to larger corporations.

Data protection and technological independence also remain important considerations, particularly as European governments examine their reliance on American technology providers.

Germany will need to balance international cooperation with its ambition to maintain control over critical industrial technologies and sensitive manufacturing information.

The declaration establishes a framework for cooperation, but it does not by itself guarantee widespread AI adoption or immediate improvements in industrial productivity.

Its success will depend on whether businesses can translate the partnership into practical applications that deliver measurable results.

Germany and NVIDIA Look Toward a New Era of Industrial Innovation

Germany’s industrial AI agreement with NVIDIA signals a growing determination to bring artificial intelligence into the country’s traditional economic strengths.

The partnership connects German engineering expertise with NVIDIA’s advanced computing technologies, creating opportunities for innovation in robotics, autonomous manufacturing and industrial automation.

Planned startup investments and ongoing cooperation with Siemens provide early examples of how that strategy could develop.

Yet the larger question remains whether Germany can bring these technologies into widespread commercial use, particularly among smaller manufacturers that form the backbone of its industrial economy.

For NVIDIA, the agreement strengthens its relationships with European industry and creates additional opportunities to expand the use of its AI technologies.

For Germany, the stakes are considerably broader. Industrial AI could influence how the country manufactures products, develops advanced machinery and competes internationally.

The Berlin declaration marks the beginning of another phase in that transition. The real test will come when AI moves beyond demonstrations and becomes part of everyday factory operations.
