Oman has entered a new phase of infrastructure modernization with the deployment of autonomous AI-powered asphalt paving technology in Dhofar. The advanced paving system was inaugurated during Phase 4 of the Sultan Said bin Taimur Road dualization project in the Wilayat of Muqshin.

To support the initiative, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) partnered with Galfar Engineering and Contracting. As a result, Oman introduced intelligent road construction technology designed to improve paving accuracy and road durability.

In addition, officials said the innovation will help reduce construction defects and speed up project completion timelines.

Oman Launches First AI Asphalt Technology

The new system uses advanced AI-controlled processes and intelligent data systems to automate asphalt paving activities. According to government officials, the technology provides precise control over asphalt thickness and road leveling while minimizing human intervention.

The project represents the first deployment of autonomous asphalt self-paving technology in Oman’s road and infrastructure sector. Authorities believe the move will strengthen the nation’s push toward digital transformation and smart infrastructure development under Oman Vision 2040.

Dr. Said bin Mohammed Al Saqri, Economic Adviser at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, described the launch as a “major step” toward automating civil engineering and road construction projects across the Sultanate.

How AI Assists in Road Construction

AI-based paving techniques use smart automation and real-time data analysis to improve construction processes. The technology offers several advantages over conventional paving methods:

    • enhanced paving accuracy
    • faster project completion
    • increased asphalt durability
    • lowered implementation errors
    • safer construction sites
    • reduced maintenance costs

Officials also highlighted the environmental benefits of the technology, noting that automated paving systems can help reduce carbon emissions and complement Oman’s green mobility initiatives.

    Supporting Oman Vision 2040

The implementation of the smart infrastructure supports Oman Vision 2040, the country’s long-term strategy for innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable economic growth.

In recent years, the government has increased investments in smart technologies. As a result, Oman aims to modernize transportation systems and strengthen national competitiveness.

The Sultan Said bin Taimur Road project is one of Oman’s most important infrastructure projects. The highway connects vital areas throughout the country and plays a crucial role in transportation, tourism, and economic activity.

AI and the Future of Infrastructure

Oman’s decision is part of a wider regional trend to adopt artificial intelligence in infrastructure and construction projects. AI-enabled engineering technologies are fast emerging as an important tool to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and allow smarter urban development across the Gulf region.

The successful launch in Dhofar, Oman, could lead to wider adoption of AI-enabled construction systems on road projects across the country in the future. It also puts Oman on the map as an emerging leader in AI innovation and smart infrastructure development in the region.
