Tesla just took automotive safety another step forward by introducing the latest technology called Tesla Vision AI airbags. According to reports, this latest innovation allows the vehicle to anticipate unavoidable crashes before they occur and deploy airbags and seat belt systems before the impact.

The manufacturer stated that this innovative Tesla Vision AI system will enable airbags and restraint systems to be deployed up to 70 milliseconds before the impact.

While it may seem negligible, Tesla believes that such reaction time could save lives in case of a terrible accident and protect occupants from injuries.

The Basics of Tesla Vision AI System

Typical car airbags rely on physical crash sensors embedded into the body of the vehicle. The sensors trigger airbags only when an accident happens.

The newest innovation from Tesla involves the use of its camera-based Tesla Vision AI system. The camera system evaluates environmental conditions to anticipate an accident prior to the physical crash, making it possible to tighten the belts and inflate airbags.

Tesla explained that its predictive system will allow the deployment of restraints up to 70 milliseconds before traditional safety systems react.

    Why 70 Milliseconds is Important

During a terrible crash, each millisecond matters a lot.

According to engineers at Tesla, early airbag deployment helps to position passengers better to avoid severe injuries during a crash. The company claims that they used real-world collision data collected from millions of cars to train the system. Unlike traditional lab experiments, Tesla uses simulated real-world accidents to optimize airbag deployment timing and minimize the chance of passenger injuries.

    AI-Powered Safety via Software Update

Another great benefit offered by the latest technology is its ability to roll out via over-the-air software updates.

The company stated that their new feature will become a standard for all new Tesla cars fitted with the latest hardware. Owners of existing models will be able to get the latest safety features without buying any extra hardware.

This highlights the software-first approach Tesla takes to develop vehicles. With Tesla, drivers will enjoy more advanced features for years after purchase.

    Tesla’s Camera-Only Systems Still Controversial

The news came amid a heated debate over Tesla’s controversial camera-only approach to self-driving cars and safety systems in general.

Many manufacturers combine radar sensors, LiDAR sensors and cameras to operate self-driving technologies safely while Tesla relies solely on artificial intelligence computer vision to analyze the environment and make decisions.

Despite the criticism, Tesla believes AI systems are much more efficient than the usual sensor-based systems, and that AI systems offer better flexibility than the limited functionality of the latter in bad weather.

Artificial intelligence is changing vehicle safety systems

Tesla’s latest development is just one of the many ways AI is changing vehicle safety systems. Today’s AI systems can predict danger and take preventative action, rather than merely protecting passengers in the event of a collision.

Tesla feels that their predictive safety system based on artificial intelligence technology will soon be a part of a new generation of safety technologies.
