    Key Takeaways

    • UNESCO promoted safe and inclusive AI for women in the Caribbean through a workshop on 9 March 2026 in Jamaica, coinciding with International Women’s Day.
    • The event addressed digital safety risks like online harassment and bias in AI that disproportionately affect women and girls.
    • Participants received practical training on AI, emphasizing safe use and critical evaluation of online content.
    • Discussions focused on how AI can promote gender equality while also recognizing potential risks of widening gaps.
    • UNESCO aims to ensure equitable and secure digital transformation for all users in the Caribbean through ongoing initiatives.

UNESCO promoted safe and inclusive AI for women in the Caribbean through a regional workshop held on 9 March 2026 in Kingston, Jamaica. The event aligned with International Women’s Day. It gathered over 50 participants from governments, youth groups, and civil society. The initiative focused on improving digital safety and awareness of artificial intelligence across the region.

Addressing Risks of AI for Women in the Caribbean

The workshop highlighted risks linked to digital technologies. It examined technology-facilitated gender-based violence. Cases include online harassment, identity misuse, and non-consensual image sharing. Women and girls face higher exposure to these threats.

Artificial intelligence tools can amplify these risks. Generative AI can produce harmful content at scale. It can also spread misinformation and create deepfake materials. Bias in AI systems may reinforce existing inequalities. These issues directly affect safe and inclusive AI for women in the Caribbean.

Building Skills for Safe and Inclusive AI Use

Participants received practical training on AI systems. Sessions explained how AI tools function in real-world contexts. Attendees explored both benefits and potential harms.

Hands-on activities supported safer digital practices. The program provided guidance on responsible AI use. It also encouraged critical evaluation of online content. These efforts aim to strengthen safe and inclusive AI for women in the Caribbean through education and awareness.

Promoting Gender Equality Through AI Initiatives

Discussions examined how AI can support gender equality. Participants reviewed ways technology can improve access and participation. At the same time, they identified how AI may widen gaps if not managed properly.

The workshop is part of UNESCO’s broader regional research. This work focuses on AI fairness and online safety for women and girls. It supports long-term digital inclusion strategies.

UNESCO continues to promote policies and programs that advance safe and inclusive AI for women in the Caribbean. The goal is to ensure digital transformation remains equitable and secure for all users.
