Thailand’s AI startup scene is getting a direct push from OpenAI.
OpenAI and Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) have launched an eight-week startup accelerator. The program is designed to move promising AI prototypes closer to real-world deployment.
The OpenAI x MHESI AI Accelerator starts with ten Thai startups. Their projects focus on healthcare, wellness, and education. OpenAI says this is its first public-private partnership with the Thai government aimed specifically at local startups.
The initiative also involves Thailand’s National Innovation Agency (NIA), Mahidol University, and Techsauce. It is less about building impressive demos and more about making products that people can actually use.
Thailand Is Already a Major Market for ChatGPT
OpenAI isn’t entering Thailand without an existing user base. The company says Thailand ranks among the world’s top 20 countries for weekly active ChatGPT users. Codex adoption has moved even faster. Since the beginning of 2026, weekly active Codex usage in Thailand has grown more than 350-fold. That also puts the country among OpenAI’s top 20 markets for Codex usage. The numbers suggest Thai users are moving beyond basic AI experimentation. Many are already using these tools to write software and build products.
Ten Thai Startups Make Up the First Cohort
The first accelerator cohort contains ten companies. Five focus on medical and wellness AI. The other five are working in education. The startups are CARIVA, Wello Food, Dietz, Precisionize, FitSloth, Curico, insKru, Floaino, EasyKids Robotics, and Globish. NIA, the Ministry of Education, and the MHESI innovation network helped select the participants. Some teams also took part in the AIAT x OpenAI Codex Hackathon Bangkok earlier this year.
Healthcare and Education Are the Immediate Targets
The choice of sectors isn’t random. Thailand faces growing healthcare demands as its population ages. Prevention and independent living are becoming more important as a result. Education presents another challenge. Thailand wants stronger learning outcomes while preparing workers for a more digital economy. The accelerator gives founders a chance to apply advanced AI to these distinctly local problems.
Each Startup Gets OpenAI API Credits and Technical Support
OpenAI will give every participating startup $2,000 in API credits. Teams will also receive access to its latest frontier models. More important, founders will get one-on-one technical guidance and a dedicated mentor. Weekly sessions will cover engineering, product design, automated testing, and AI evaluation. Privacy, security, responsible AI, cost management, fundraising, and growth are also on the schedule.
The Program Is Built Around Deployment, Not Just Demos
The accelerator has a fairly practical target. Every startup must establish a product, pilot, evaluation, or commercial milestone. By the end, teams should have more than a pitch deck. OpenAI expects either a working product or a substantial product upgrade. Startups should also provide feedback from representative users and early evaluation results. They will need a credible path toward implementation too.
CARIVA Is Building an AI Voice Agent for Hospitals
CARIVA offers a good example of what the program wants to produce. The Thai startup is developing a multilingual AI voice agent for hospital phone lines. It can handle routine requests such as appointment scheduling. The system is also designed to recognize possible medical emergencies. CARIVA plans to work with OpenAI on evaluating and steering its real-time speech model. The startup wants its first capability running inside a pilot hospital by Demo Day.
Curico Wants to Bring AI Into Children’s Learning
Curico is taking the education route. Its platform uses AI to support children, families, and educators. The technology can guide hands-on activities and create stories. It can also provide personalized feedback. During the accelerator, Curico wants to test whether these features work safely in actual learning environments. The startup plans pilots in Bangkok childcare centers and wants a pathway to more than 200 locations.
More Than 200 Teachers Could Join Curico’s AI Workshops
Curico has set some unusually specific goals for the program. It plans to train more than 200 teachers through an AI storybook workshop. The company also wants to test AI-assisted grading at Chulalongkorn University. Additional school pilots are planned with MHESI and Thailand’s Ministry of Education. Curico also wants its family learning platform to exceed 1,000 monthly active users. These targets make the accelerator easier to judge on actual outcomes rather than vague promises.
Thailand’s Government Is Bringing Its Own Network
OpenAI isn’t doing all the heavy lifting. MHESI will connect startups with Thailand’s research and talent networks. NIA will provide links to funding and growth opportunities. Mahidol University will contribute academic knowledge and mentors. That mix matters because access to an AI model alone rarely creates a sustainable startup. Companies still need researchers, customers, capital, testing environments, and people who understand the industries they are trying to change.
Demo Day Will Put the Startups in Front of Investors
The eight-week accelerator will end with a Demo Day in Bangkok in November. Startups will demonstrate what they built during the program. They will also present user evidence, evaluation findings, and deployment plans. Investors, universities, hospitals, schools, government agencies, and potential customers are expected to attend. That creates a possible bridge between an experimental product and its first meaningful deployment.
OpenAI Is Looking Beyond Thailand’s Domestic Market
There is a bigger ambition behind the accelerator. OpenAI and its Thai partners want successful companies to eventually compete internationally. Thailand provides the local expertise and problems worth solving. OpenAI brings frontier models, engineering support, and experience from the wider AI ecosystem. The first ten startups will test whether that combination works. OpenAI says it hopes the program can become a repeatable model for helping Thai founders turn prototypes into trusted products.
Thailand’s AI Story Is Moving From Adoption to Building
The most interesting number may still be that 350-fold increase in Codex usage. It suggests Thailand isn’t simply becoming another large market for consumer AI. Developers are increasingly using AI to build software.
The accelerator takes that activity one step further. It asks whether local founders can turn AI experiments into products that survive outside a hackathon. Healthcare and education make that test particularly demanding. Reliability, privacy, evaluation, and safety can’t be afterthoughts in either sector.
If the first cohort delivers working deployments, OpenAI’s Thailand partnership could become more than another startup program. It could offer a blueprint for building local AI companies around local problems, then taking the strongest products beyond Thailand.
