As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, Kentucky lawmakers are taking steps to address its potential impacts on elections and citizens’ privacy. The state’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force recently adopted 11 recommendations aimed at creating responsible AI policies, ahead of the General Assembly’s 2025 session. The measures focus on safeguarding election integrity, protecting personal data, and ensuring ethical AI practices.
Co-chaired by Rep. Josh Bray, R-Mount Vernon, the task force has emphasized the need for proactive legislation. Among its recommendations are policies to regulate the use of AI in elections, such as making it a crime to impersonate an election official and requiring disclosures for AI-generated content. The task force also urged a broader review of laws related to using an individual’s likeness without consent, reflecting concerns over the misuse of AI-generated “deep fakes” in political campaigns.
The task force has called for collaboration between educational institutions, state agencies, and infrastructure providers to promote responsible AI development. Other initiatives include urging the federal government to take swift regulatory action and allocating funds to research centers for AI advancements. As Kentucky prepares to address these issues, lawmakers acknowledge the challenges ahead but are determined to lay the groundwork for ethical and secure AI integration.
