Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has signed a landmark multi-year partnership with OpenAI and G42, becoming the first energy company to deploy OpenAI Frontier technology across its operations.
Announced on November 2, 2026, during the ADIPEC conference in Abu Dhabi, the agreement marks a major expansion of artificial intelligence in the energy industry. ADNOC plans to connect advanced AI agents with its existing industrial systems, allowing operational, financial and commercial decisions to be evaluated together.
The partnership combines OpenAI’s advanced reasoning models, G42’s sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE and decades of ADNOC’s industrial expertise. The companies aim to improve oilfield development planning, optimize production decisions and strengthen efficiency across the energy value chain.
For ADNOC, the ambition is bigger than introducing another AI tool. It wants artificial intelligence to help coordinate decisions across an entire energy business, from underground reservoirs to international markets.
ADNOC Becomes First Energy Company to Deploy OpenAI Frontier
ADNOC’s agreement with OpenAI and G42 introduces a new approach to managing complex industrial operations. Instead of relying on separate AI applications for individual tasks, the company intends to use OpenAI Frontier to connect intelligence across different business functions.
Energy companies generate enormous amounts of information from drilling activities, reservoir assessments, production facilities and commercial operations. Much of that information sits within specialized systems, making it difficult to assess how one decision might affect another.
OpenAI Frontier is designed to address that challenge by coordinating AI agents that can analyze information across multiple operational environments. For ADNOC, this means bringing engineering, investment and commercial considerations into a more connected decision-making process.
The agreement was witnessed by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.
ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said the partnership would help the company combine advanced AI capabilities with its industrial experience to improve decision-making, create additional value and strengthen energy security.
OpenAI Technology Could Transform Oilfield Development Planning
One of the first applications will focus on field master planning, a complicated process that determines how oil and gas resources should be developed over time.
Oilfield development requires engineers to study geological formations, reservoir conditions, production infrastructure and project economics. These assessments often involve separate teams working through extensive technical information before reaching a final development strategy.
ADNOC wants to change that process using OpenAI’s advanced reasoning models.
The technology will build on ENERGYai, ADNOC’s existing subsurface AI platform, by connecting decades of industrial data covering thousands of wells, multiple reservoirs and hundreds of surface facilities. Financial considerations, development costs and commercial opportunities will also form part of the analysis.
According to ADNOC, the system could help prepare and optimize complex field development plans in hours rather than months.
The company also expects the technology to evaluate an entire field rather than treating individual reservoirs and facilities as separate planning problems. This could allow engineers to compare development scenarios more efficiently while identifying potential operational and financial trade-offs.
The projected improvement remains a company target, with actual performance depending on how the technology operates when deployed across real industrial workflows.
AI Agents Will Help ADNOC Maximize the Value of Every Barrel
Another major application involves connecting operational intelligence with commercial decision-making across ADNOC’s energy business.
Oil production does not end when crude reaches the surface. Processing requirements, refinery capacity, transportation costs, market demand and trading conditions all influence the financial value of each barrel.
ADNOC plans to use interconnected AI agents to examine these relationships before major operational decisions are made.
The system will analyze information from production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading while continuously forecasting crude oil supply, demand, prices and margins.
By connecting these activities, ADNOC expects to identify how production decisions could affect commercial opportunities elsewhere in its operations.
For example, changing production schedules might influence refinery requirements or transportation arrangements. AI-generated analysis could help teams understand those consequences earlier and compare available options.
ADNOC describes the initiative as an effort to assess the potential value of oil while it remains underground, giving decision-makers a broader understanding of how operational choices influence commercial outcomes.
G42 Will Support the Partnership Through Sovereign AI Infrastructure
G42 will play a central role in supporting the deployment of OpenAI technology across ADNOC’s operations.
The Abu Dhabi-based technology company will provide sovereign AI infrastructure in the UAE, allowing the partners to combine advanced AI models with ADNOC’s proprietary industrial information.
Data security is particularly important in the energy industry, where operational systems support critical infrastructure and nationally significant resources.
Under the agreement, ADNOC will maintain oversight of the AI solutions developed through the partnership. Human specialists will also retain responsibility for consequential decisions.
The companies intend to strengthen cybersecurity through OpenAI’s Daybreak Blue initiative, which supports security teams in identifying vulnerabilities and protecting critical infrastructure.
G42 already has experience working with ADNOC through AIQ, a technology company focused on developing artificial intelligence applications for energy operations.
The new partnership extends that relationship by introducing frontier AI capabilities designed to connect specialized industrial systems with broader business intelligence.
ADNOC Expands Its Existing AI and Robotics Strategy
ADNOC has spent several years integrating artificial intelligence into its operations, making the OpenAI partnership part of a much larger technology strategy.
The company already has more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases deployed or under development across drilling, production, infrastructure, logistics and shipping.
One of its major initiatives is ENERGYai, developed with AIQ to support complex subsurface workflows. The platform uses a 70-billion-parameter AI model trained on more than 50 years of ADNOC data.
Another system, AiPSO, helps production teams identify performance issues before they affect output.
ADNOC also operates an AI-enabled Real-Time Operations Center connecting more than 120 drilling rigs in a single environment. The company reports that the system has reduced engineering effort by approximately 30% to 40%.
These existing applications provide a foundation for the new agreement. OpenAI Frontier is expected to connect information from specialized systems rather than replace the industrial technologies ADNOC has already developed.
More Than 40,000 ADNOC Employees Already Use ChatGPT Enterprise
The partnership also builds on ADNOC’s existing adoption of generative AI across its workforce.
The company has introduced ChatGPT Enterprise to more than 40,000 employees, reporting an adoption rate exceeding 97%. ADNOC describes the initiative as the largest enterprise deployment of ChatGPT in the Middle East and North Africa.
That level of adoption gives the company an established base of employees already familiar with AI-assisted workflows.
Under the new agreement, ADNOC and OpenAI will collaborate on developing advanced AI solutions while providing additional training to employees responsible for using and managing the technology.
Workforce development will be important as the company introduces more sophisticated AI agents into engineering and commercial processes.
Unlike general-purpose workplace assistants, industrial AI systems must operate within technical constraints, safety requirements and established operational procedures. Employees will need to understand both the capabilities and limitations of these systems before relying on their recommendations.
OpenAI Strengthens Its Presence in the UAE’s Industrial AI Market
The ADNOC agreement adds to OpenAI’s expanding relationship with the United Arab Emirates, where government organizations and major businesses are increasing investments in advanced artificial intelligence.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman attended ADIPEC in Abu Dhabi as the partnership was announced, highlighting the growing importance of energy applications for the company’s technology.
The agreement also comes as the UAE develops large-scale AI infrastructure and seeks to expand the use of advanced models across government, industry and financial services.
For OpenAI, the energy sector presents challenges that differ considerably from consumer chatbots or conventional business software.
Industrial operations involve physical infrastructure, long-term investment decisions and complex engineering processes. Mistakes can carry significant financial and operational consequences, making reliability and human oversight essential.
The partnership gives OpenAI an opportunity to demonstrate how its frontier models can support large-scale industrial decision-making.
For the UAE, it reinforces Abu Dhabi’s efforts to position itself as a center for advanced AI development and deployment.
What the ADNOC, OpenAI and G42 Partnership Means for the Energy Industry
The agreement reflects a shift in how major industrial companies are approaching artificial intelligence.
Early enterprise AI deployments often focused on automating repetitive tasks, analyzing documents or improving employee productivity. ADNOC’s latest initiative aims to connect decisions that traditionally depend on separate technical and commercial systems.
That distinction matters in industries where a single operational decision can influence multiple departments, physical assets and financial outcomes.
If the technology performs as intended, ADNOC could reduce planning times, improve coordination and give employees a more complete understanding of complex operational challenges.
The partnership may also attract attention from other asset-intensive sectors, including manufacturing, mining and logistics, where similar information gaps can complicate decision-making.
ADNOC has outlined ambitious goals, although the announcement does not yet establish the long-term financial or operational benefits of the deployment.
The next challenge will be turning those objectives into measurable results.
For now, the partnership places ADNOC among the companies testing how frontier AI can move beyond standalone applications and become part of the decision-making infrastructure of a major industrial business.
