Recent agreements aim to equip one million talents with skills to drive economic growth and innovation.

Indonesia is ambitiously positioning itself as a leader in digital innovation within Southeast Asia, particularly through advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). During the Accelerated Indonesia’s Economic Growth discussion, Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid emphasized the nation’s potential, remarking, “Indonesia has big potential to become…a leader and center of AI innovation…with the growing digital economy.” The backdrop of this assertion is Indonesia’s rapid digital transformation, where its digital economy is projected to reach approximately 90 billion USD by 2024.

Aligned with this vision, the recent signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and the Wadhwani Foundation marks a pivotal step toward enhancing Indonesia’s digital workforce. Signed at the Indonesia-India CEO Forum during President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to India for the 76th Republic Day celebrations, this agreement pledges to equip one million Indonesian digital talents with necessary skills over the next three years. The initiative stands to significantly fortify Indonesia’s economic framework as it strives to meet its Golden Vision 2045 goals.

The collaboration, with expected funding worth IDR 3.5 trillion (approximately INR 18,550 crore), is set to deliver advanced training and cultivate 100,000 future-ready entrepreneurs by leveraging Wadhwani Foundation’s AI-enabled skilling platforms. These platforms will spearhead two primary programs: the ‘Job Ready’ initiative, aimed at enhancing employability through soft skills training, and the ‘Ignite’ program, which seeks to instill entrepreneurial mindsets among participants.

Ajay Kela, President & CEO of Wadhwani Foundation, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration demonstrates our dedication to fostering growth in emergent economies and creating quality jobs for young people.” This sentiment echoes through the heart of Indonesia’s initiative to uplift its youth population—one of the largest and most dynamic demographics globally. Such strategic developments, particularly focusing on digital and leadership capabilities, are central to forging the country’s path toward becoming developed by 2045.

Vikram Sinha, President Director & CEO of Indosat, reinforced this shared vision, noting, “Our priority is to prepare the next generation of leaders with the skills and resources they need to thrive.” The partnership’s aim, as elaborated by Sinha, is to align global expertise in AI-enabled skilling with Indosat’s expansive local knowledge and reach, paving pathways for every individual to access equal opportunities for future success.

According to Minister Hafid, Indonesia stands as the second-largest digital investment destination within ASEAN, signifying its growing appeal to investors and innovators alike. She pointed out the dominance of Indonesia’s e-commerce, which not only contributes to nearly 40% of the ASEAN market share but also recorded significant activity with values hitting around 77 billion USD just last year. This burgeoning digital economy shines light on Indonesia’s commitment to integrating technology and innovation across various sectors.

With regions like Jakarta, East Kalimantan, and the Riau Islands demonstrating increasing interest in AI technology, indications are clear: Indonesia is not merely adopting technology but is actively constructing a comprehensive and sustainable innovation ecosystem. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is tirelessly working on reinforcing this digital framework, underscoring the nation’s ambition to utilize AI effectively to amplify its global competitiveness.

The synergistic efforts between the government and private sectors, exemplified by the collaboration between Indosat and Wadhwani Foundation, are set to redefine the workforce dynamics within Indonesia. The anticipated outcome of these initiatives is not solely limited to economic growth but also the establishment of Indonesia as a competitive force on the global stage.

Through strategic investments, training programs, and enhanced learning frameworks, Indonesia is gearing up for monumental changes. The dual push of improved digital infrastructure and workforce capabilities aligns with its broader ambition—a collective step forward on the road to achieving the Golden Vision 2045.
