Google Search has officially entered the age of AI-powered search.

At Google I/O 2026, the tech giant announced what it described as the “biggest upgrade to Search ever,” launching new AI-first Search capabilities powered by its AI models and AI Mode.

The launch will have a huge impact on searchers, but also on publishers, marketers, SEOs and social media creators who rely on Google traffic.

    Google Search Is Going Conversational

One of the more interesting things that Google announced about its Search products during Google I/O 2026 was the introduction of a new conversational AI search experience with AI Mode.

With AI Mode, users can type complex queries, ask multi-step questions, upload images and continue follow-up discussions right within Search.

According to Google, AI Mode uses Google’s multimodal AI models to analyze text, voice, images, and files to generate well-organized answers with relevant links from across the web.

The latest update brings several new features including:

    • AI-powered suggestions for users
    • Long-form conversations
    • AI Search’s deep research mode
    • AI-generated summaries
    • Personalized answers to user queries
    • Real-time conversation feature called Search Live
    • Web monitoring with the help of AI agents

The latest announcement is one of the biggest upgrades for Google Search that the company CEO Sundar Pichai has worked on.

Gemini AI Is Now Integrated into Search

At I/O 2026, Google has launched several major new updates related to Search powered by Gemini AI.

Google has now expanded Gemini’s abilities with several new Gemini-based products including:

    • Gemini 3.5 Flash
    • Gemini Omni
    • Personalized AI Search
    • Agentic Search experience
    • AI web explorers

The new system can be used for browsing hundreds of websites and producing fully cited research documents in mere minutes.

That’s going to significantly increase the role of Search in providing users with answers from the web without having to visit external pages.

AI Search Agents Could Change the Way We Interact Online

One of the most interesting features introduced by Google Search was the new system of AI agents.

    The latter can reportedly:

    • Monitor online information and deliver updates to users
    • Schedule services
    • Communicate with users through Gmail and voice messages
    • Call businesses and schedule meetings
    • Automatically conduct online research

Google has dubbed the new AI-powered Search era “Agentic Gemini era.”

If Google manages to successfully implement AI agents, that might completely change the way users interact with websites and mobile applications online in the near future.

What Does It Mean for SEO and Content Creators

One of the biggest trends we’ve seen recently is AI Overviews, a system that provides users with detailed AI-generated summaries without having to leave Google Search page.

Some researchers believe that AI Summaries are becoming a major threat for many content producers as they decrease organic visits to websites and blogs.

    Here’s what recent studies show:

    • AI Overviews often dominate the top SERPs
    • Users click on external links less frequently than they did before
    • Sometimes AI summaries cite websites not included in organic rankings
    • Publisher visibility will probably be affected by rising popularity of AI Summaries

Google claims that the company plans to make AI search more transparent by increasing direct linking and integration with websites via previews, subscriptions and more.

That’s why in the nearest future, we might see that SEO strategies become increasingly focused on:

    • Visibility optimization for AI-powered search results
    • Improving brand reputation and authority
    • Creating high-quality structured content
    • Optimizing conversational searches
    • Ensuring website citation ability

Google Has Also Introduced AI Ads for Search

Another surprising Google’s announcement made during Google I/O was related to Google Ads.

As Google has launched conversational AI Mode for Search, the company has started experimenting with advertising solutions that work within AI Mode and conversational Search.

That means that we’ll probably see Google’s attempt to introduce new AI-generated ads for conversational and agentic Search experiences.

AI Search Might Be a New Major Advertising Ecosystem in a Few Years

The Era of AI-First Search Experience

We’ve seen how Google I/O 2026 transformed Google’s Search with a variety of innovative features.

By introducing AI Mode and expanding Gemini AI model’s functions, Google made one thing obvious – the future of Search is AI-first.
