Global experts develop AI Glossary to support critical discussions on technology’s societal impact

A group of international experts from leading institutions has developed a glossary designed to encourage deeper discussions on artificial intelligence AI and its societal implications.

Titled Critical Conversations about AI: A Glossary for Big Questions and Bold Ideas, the resource moves beyond standard definitions to address complex ethical, philosophical, and social aspects of AI.

The glossary was created by experts from the Centre for AI in Government at the University of Birmingham, the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technology (Obvia) in Canada, and the Tech Hub at the Geneva Graduate Institute.

Contributors include researchers from Laval University, Glasgow University, and the University of Montreal, with financial support from the Fonds de recherche du Québec.

Developed in response to discussions at the Action AI Summit in Paris last month, the glossary serves educators, policymakers, industry professionals, and individuals seeking a more comprehensive understanding of AI’s broader impact.

Expanding AI literacy through thought-provoking concepts

Unlike conventional AI glossaries, this resource presents each term with a definition, real-world examples, and open-ended questions to encourage reflection and discussion. Topics covered include:

    • AI Augmentation: The role of AI in enhancing human efforts rather than replacing them.
    • AI Narratives:The underlying stories and assumptions that shape AI’s development and impact.
    • Anthropomorphism: The risks of attributing human characteristics to AI systems.
    • Digital Sovereignty: The ability of nations or communities to control their digital infrastructure and data.
    • Techno-solutionism: The tendency to rely on AI and technology as solutions to complex societal problems.

The glossary also explores the Gullibility Gap, which refers to the human tendency to overestimate AI’s intelligence, leading to misplaced trust in its outputs. This issue is particularly relevant as AI systems become more sophisticated and widely adopted.

Dr. Lyse Langlois, Executive Director at Obvia, said:

“The glossary is an essential tool in fostering critical reflection on AI’s societal implications. By providing nuanced definitions and stimulating discussions, we aim to empower individuals and organizations to engage meaningfully with the future of AI.”

A living document for ongoing AI discussions

The glossary is intended to evolve over time, incorporating new insights as AI technology and its societal impact continue to develop. Contributors encourage suggestions for additional terms and concepts from researchers, educators, and industry professionals.

Dr. Jérôme Duberry, Managing Director of the Tech Hub at the Geneva Graduate Institute, said:

“This glossary helps translate complex AI concepts into meaningful conversations that bridge theory and practice. AI literacy is crucial—not only for students but also for senior decision-makers who shape policies and strategies. By fostering open dialogue, we can collectively work toward a future where AI is developed and used in an ethical, sustainable, and inclusive manner.”

Encouraging broader engagement with AI ethics and governance

The glossary’s creators view it as a foundational tool for educational institutions, businesses, and policymakers to facilitate discussions about AI’s role in society. By addressing AI subjectivity, digital inclusion, and human-AI symbiosis, the resource encourages broader engagement with AI ethics and governance.

Dr. Martin Wählisch, Associate Professor at the Center for AI in Government at the University of Birmingham, said:

“AI is not just a technological evolution; it’s a societal transformation. Critical thinking about its impact is more essential than ever. This glossary serves as a key resource for fostering informed discussions—both in classrooms and high-level policy debates—helping to navigate the complexities of emerging AI-related challenges with responsibility and foresight.”
