Travelers used to follow a predictable path when searching for hotels. They opened Google, searched a destination, compared properties, checked reviews, and then booked. AI is starting to change that routine. Travelers can now describe the type of stay they want in plain language. An AI assistant can then narrow the choices before the traveler visits a hotel website or booking platform. That shift creates a new challenge for hotels. Their property may be filtered out before a traditional search result even appears.

Travelers Are Asking AI Instead of Browsing Endless Hotel Results

Traditional hotel search gives travelers pages of options. Generative AI can reduce that list almost instantly. A traveler might ask for a quiet hotel near a business district. Another might want a family-friendly property away from crowded tourist areas. The AI interprets the request and recommends a few properties. That means some hotels may never enter the traveler’s consideration set. Operto CEO Tim Major told Hotel Dive that synthesized AI answers could reshape hotel distribution. AI is starting to decide which properties appear relevant before travelers compare them manually.

Ranking First Might Matter Less Than Being Included at All

Hotels have spent years learning how to compete in search engines. They optimize landing pages, buy ads, improve rankings, and track clicks. AI search creates a different problem. A hotel can rank well on Google but still disappear from an AI-generated answer. Marketers may also struggle to understand why that happened. Traditional search offers impressions, clicks, and ranking data. AI systems may simply return three hotels and ignore the rest. The key question is changing. Hotels may need to ask whether AI understands their property at all.

A Hotel That Tries to Be Everything Could Have an AI Problem

Generic hotel marketing may become less useful in AI search. Some properties describe themselves as suitable for almost every type of traveler. That can make their identity unclear. AI systems need strong signals to match a hotel with a specific request. A clearly positioned property may have an advantage. For example, an AI assistant can more easily match a quiet boutique hotel with a traveler seeking exactly that experience. Vague positioning makes the connection harder. Major argues that detailed AI queries could favor hotels with a more defined audience and identity.

AI Could Become Another Powerful Travel Intermediary

The hotel industry already knows the power of digital intermediaries. Online travel agencies became major players in hotel discovery and booking. Hotels responded with direct booking campaigns and stronger loyalty programs. Generative AI introduces another layer. It may influence travelers before they reach an OTA or hotel website. An AI assistant does not need to process the reservation to affect the outcome. It only needs to decide which properties deserve attention. If a hotel is missing from the shortlist, the traveler may never know it exists.

Hotels Are Starting to Think About GEO Alongside SEO

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is gaining attention as AI search grows. SEO focuses on visibility inside traditional search engines. GEO looks at how brands appear in AI-generated answers. Hotels can test how often their properties appear for different travel questions. A hotel may appear for one query but vanish from another. That gap can reveal unclear positioning or weak digital signals. Operto has introduced a GEO Consultant tool for this purpose. It is designed to help hotels understand how AI systems discover and describe their properties.

Agentic AI Could Monitor How Other AI Systems See a Hotel

AI agents may eventually help hotels monitor other AI platforms. Instead of manually testing dozens of prompts, an agent could run them automatically. It could compare how different systems describe the same property. One platform might classify a hotel as luxury. Another might treat it as a standard business property. Those differences can matter. They may reveal outdated information or inconsistent branding. Agentic AI could make those problems easier to spot. Hotels would still lack direct control over external AI systems, but they could gain better visibility into how they are represented.

The Battle for Hotel Bookings Could Move Before the Click

Hotel marketing has long focused on clicks, traffic, rankings, and conversions. AI search moves part of the competition earlier in the journey. An AI assistant may narrow dozens of options to only a few hotels. That can happen before the traveler visits any booking website. A hotel excluded at this stage may not record a lost click. There is no failed conversion to measure. The traveler simply never sees the property. That makes AI visibility difficult to track with traditional analytics. Hotels may need new tools to understand this part of the booking journey.

Hotel SEO Isn’t Dead. The Discovery Layer Is Just Getting Bigger

Google, hotel websites, OTAs, and review platforms still matter. AI search does not replace those channels overnight. Instead, it adds another layer above them. Travelers can now explain what they want in natural language. AI can then perform some of the sorting and comparison work. That changes how hotels compete for attention. A top search ranking may no longer be enough. Hotels also need to appear in AI-generated recommendations. In the future, being understood by AI could become as important as being easy to find on Google.
