Pinterest is pushing further into artificial intelligence with a new set of tools designed to connect visual discovery, shopping and advertising more closely.

The company has introduced Visual Search Ads, a new ad format that places sponsored products inside visually driven search experiences. At the same time, Pinterest is testing Restyle, an AI-powered feature that lets users redesign rooms using images of their own spaces.

Both additions point to a broader shift inside Pinterest. AI is becoming less of a background technology and more of the engine behind how people search, discover products and interact with ideas on the platform.

Pinterest Brings Ads Into Visual Search

Visual Search Ads are designed to appear when users search through images rather than relying only on typed keywords. Pinterest can analyze what appears in a Pin or image and use that visual context to surface relevant sponsored products.

This approach fits naturally with how people already use Pinterest. Many users arrive with only a rough idea of what they want. They may recognize a style, product or room design visually without knowing the right words to describe it. AI helps bridge that gap by treating the image itself as part of the search query.

Pinterest says users conduct more than 80 billion searches every month, with visual discovery playing a major role across the platform. The company also says a large share of those searches have commercial intent, making visual search increasingly valuable to advertisers.

Visual Search Ads are expected to enter beta for eligible advertisers across Pinterest’s advertising markets.

    Pinterest Intelligence Powers the Experience

The technology behind these features is tied closely to Pinterest Intelligence, the company’s AI system for understanding visual content and user behavior.

Pinterest Intelligence analyzes images alongside signals such as search activity, saves and engagement. That allows the platform to better understand what a person may be looking for, even when the request is not expressed clearly in words.

For example, someone might see a chair, outfit or handbag they like but have no idea what the design is called. Instead of guessing keywords, the user can rely on visual search to find similar items.

For advertisers, that creates another way to reach users when interest is already forming. The ad does not need to wait for an exact keyword. It can appear based on the visual context surrounding the user’s discovery process.

Restyle Lets Users Reimagine Their Rooms With AI

Pinterest is also experimenting with generative AI through Restyle, a feature that allows people to redesign rooms using photos of their own homes.

Users can upload an image of a room and ask Pinterest to visualize changes such as different furniture, décor, colors, artwork or design styles. The AI then generates a new version of the space based on those instructions.

The concept goes beyond simple image generation. Pinterest is trying to connect inspiration with something more personal. Instead of looking at a generic interior design image, users can see how a particular style may look inside their own room.

Restyle is being introduced in beta in the United States and Canada.

Pinterest Wants to Shorten the Path From Inspiration to Shopping

Pinterest has always operated somewhere between a search engine, social platform and shopping tool. AI is making those categories overlap even more.

A user may discover an interior design idea, save several Pins, use Restyle to see how the concept looks in their own room, then find related products through visual search. That journey could happen without leaving the Pinterest ecosystem.

This creates a shorter path between inspiration and purchase. For Pinterest, that is commercially important because the platform has long positioned itself as a place where people arrive with future plans and buying intent.

The company is now using AI to make those plans more actionable.

Performance+ Gains More AI Advertising Features

Pinterest is also expanding its Performance+ advertising platform with additional automation and campaign controls.

One of the new additions is Priority Products, which allows advertisers to tell Pinterest which items should receive more attention during a campaign. This could be useful for seasonal launches, promotions or specific product categories.

Pinterest is also introducing self-serve A/B testing so advertisers can compare different campaign approaches. The company is adding an App Promotion objective as well, giving marketers another way to optimize campaigns around app installs.

These updates show that Pinterest is using AI on both sides of the platform. Consumers get more personalized discovery tools, while advertisers receive more automation and targeting options.

AI Is Changing How People Search

The larger story behind Pinterest’s announcement is the changing shape of online search.

For years, search has largely depended on text. Users describe what they want, type a phrase and wait for the system to return results.

AI is making that process more flexible. A photo can become the query. A product inside an image can become the starting point for discovery. A picture of a room can turn into a prompt for redesign.

Pinterest is well suited to this shift because visual search has always been central to the platform. Generative AI and image recognition simply give the company more ways to work with that behavior.

Pinterest Is Building a Broader AI Strategy

Visual Search Ads and Restyle fit into a wider AI push across Pinterest.

The company has been adding AI to advertising, shopping, discovery and platform tools throughout 2026. Earlier initiatives included Business Assistant, new Performance+ capabilities, Pinterest MCP and the experimental Ask Pinterest experience.

The pattern is becoming clearer. Pinterest is not treating AI as a separate feature that users visit occasionally. The company is integrating it directly into the way people search, browse, visualize ideas and shop.

That could become one of Pinterest’s strongest advantages as visual AI becomes more common across the wider technology industry.

    What Comes Next

Pinterest’s latest updates suggest that the company sees visual AI as more than a novelty.

Visual Search Ads could give advertisers another route into high-intent discovery. Restyle could make generative AI more useful by connecting it with real spaces and real purchasing decisions.

The bigger question is how quickly users adopt these features and whether Pinterest can make them feel helpful rather than intrusive.

For now, the company’s direction is clear. Pinterest wants AI to sit at the center of discovery, advertising and shopping rather than remain a separate layer on top of the platform.
