Meta Launches Muse Personal AI Agent That Can Take Action Across Apps

Meta has introduced Muse, a personal AI agent designed to do more than answer questions. The system can browse websites, complete forms, interact with connected services, help manage tasks and take selected actions on a user’s behalf.

The launch signals a bigger shift in consumer AI. Instead of simply generating text or offering suggestions, Muse is built around the idea of delegation. A user gives it a goal, grants the necessary permissions and allows the agent to work through the steps.

Muse runs on Muse Spark, Meta’s model for agentic tasks, and operates inside a dedicated cloud environment called Muse Secure VM. Meta says this setup gives users more control over what the agent can access and what actions it can perform.

Muse Is Built to Take Action

Most AI assistants still work through a familiar pattern: a user asks a question and receives an answer. Muse is designed to go further by actually carrying out parts of a task.

The agent can open its own browser, navigate websites, complete forms and work across connected services. Meta says users can ask Muse to help arrange travel, prepare transactions, manage personal projects or assist with other multi-step activities that would normally require switching between several apps.

That distinction matters. An AI that explains how to do something is useful, but an AI that can perform parts of the process changes the relationship between users and software. Muse is being positioned as a system that can move from advice into execution.

Muse Can Continue Working After the App Is Closed

Meta is also giving Muse the ability to work on longer tasks without requiring the user to remain inside the app.

Once a task has been started, Muse can continue making progress and return when it needs additional information or approval. This could be useful for activities that take more than a few minutes, particularly when the agent needs to collect information, compare options or wait for something to change.

Meta says sensitive actions still require permission. If Muse reaches a point where it needs to send an email, complete a purchase or perform another significant action, the agent can stop and ask the user before proceeding.

Muse Remembers Useful Personal Context

Personalization is another major part of Meta’s approach. Muse can remember information that users choose to share and use that context to make future interactions more relevant.

For example, the agent could remember dietary preferences, travel habits or recurring responsibilities and factor those details into later recommendations. Meta says Muse can also connect information from previous interactions instead of treating every request as completely separate.

That could make the experience feel less repetitive. Users would not need to explain the same preferences every time they ask for help. The trade-off is that stronger personalization also requires clearer controls around what the agent stores and how that information is used.

Meta Uses Muse Secure VM to Isolate User Activity

Muse operates inside a dedicated virtual machine called Muse Secure VM. Meta says each user’s agent runs in an isolated environment rather than sharing the same workspace with other users.

This environment is where Muse can access connected services and perform approved actions. Meta says credentials remain protected and are not directly exposed to the AI model itself.

The security design is important because agentic AI introduces more risk than a standard chatbot. A wrong answer in a conversation may be inconvenient, but a wrong action involving an account, payment or external service can have a more serious impact.

Sentinel Adds Another Layer of Control

Meta has also introduced a separate security system called Sentinel that works alongside Muse.

Sentinel remains isolated from the main agent and reviews certain actions before Muse can access the wider internet or interact with external services. Meta says this creates an additional control layer between the AI agent and the actions it wants to perform.

The idea is to prevent Muse from having unrestricted access simply because a user has connected a service. Certain actions can be blocked, reviewed or escalated for user approval depending on the level of risk involved.

Users Decide What Muse Can Access

Meta says users retain control over which services they connect to Muse and what permissions they grant.

Someone could allow Muse to read certain information without allowing it to send messages or make changes. Users can also adjust permissions later, and they can disconnect individual services if they no longer want the agent to access them.

Muse also maintains a record of its activity so users can review what it has done. Meta says the agent does not directly see sensitive information such as passwords or payment credentials, even when a task requires those details.

Muse Can Help Complete Purchases

Commerce is one of the areas where Meta expects personal AI agents to become useful.

Muse supports eligible purchases through Link by Stripe, allowing the agent to help move a transaction toward completion after receiving user approval. The system can use protected payment credentials without exposing the user’s actual card details directly to the agent.

Meta also plans to add support for Shop Pay. Meanwhile, a future 1Password integration could help Muse access existing account credentials in a controlled way.

This could make shopping one of the most visible examples of agentic AI. Instead of simply recommending a product, an agent could compare options, navigate checkout and prepare the purchase while leaving the final approval to the user.

Muse Spark Powers Meta’s Agentic AI Strategy

The technology behind Muse is Muse Spark, Meta’s model designed specifically for agentic tasks.

Muse Spark is built to handle multi-step actions rather than focusing only on text generation. Meta has been gradually expanding this type of capability across its AI products, with more emphasis on planning, tool use and external actions.

Muse brings those capabilities into a dedicated consumer product. It also shows how Meta sees the next stage of competition in AI, where companies are moving beyond conversational assistants and toward systems that can actively perform digital work.

Muse Confidential VM Is Planned for Later in 2026

Meta says it is also working on a more private version of Muse’s computing environment called Muse Confidential VM.

The company plans to encrypt the entire virtual machine, including user data and conversations, with a key controlled by the user. Meta says this setup is designed so that even the company itself would not be able to access the protected information inside the environment.

That could become increasingly important as users allow AI agents to handle more personal tasks. The more useful an agent becomes, the more sensitive the information it may need to process.

Muse Is Starting in the United States

Meta is initially rolling out Muse in the United States through iOS, Android and the Muse website.

The company also plans to bring the personal AI agent to AI glasses, which could eventually allow users to interact with Muse in more situations without relying entirely on a phone or desktop interface.

Meta says many core functions will be available for free, while subscription options will provide access to additional capabilities. The company has not yet provided a detailed timeline for broader international availability.

Personal AI Agents Are Moving Into the Mainstream

Muse reflects a broader change in the AI market. The focus is slowly moving from systems that simply answer questions toward agents that can remember context, interact with outside services and complete tasks.

That shift creates new possibilities, but it also raises bigger questions around security, permissions and reliability. Users may be willing to let AI summarize an email long before they are comfortable allowing it to send one or complete a purchase.

Meta is clearly betting that these boundaries will move over time. The company is not presenting Muse as another chatbot. Instead, Meta is building it as a personal AI system that can take action, keep working, and eventually become part of everyday digital routines.
