Oman has a new sovereign AI platform, and the pitch is refreshingly practical.
Omantel technology subsidiary Otech and Omani AI startup DeepAstra have launched the DeepAstra API. The locally hosted service gives organizations access to multiple AI models through one interface. Users can test different models without building separate infrastructure for each one.
There is another important piece: the data stays local. The platform is designed around security, governance, compliance, and greater control over AI deployments.
For smaller companies, that could remove a stubborn barrier. Building AI infrastructure is expensive. Renting access to it as needed is considerably easier.
One API Opens the Door to Multiple AI Models
The DeepAstra API isn’t another standalone chatbot. Think of it more as a gateway. Companies connect to one interface and gain access to multiple AI models. They can then choose a model based on the job they need to complete. That removes the need for separate integrations every time a company wants to try something different.
Businesses Can Pay Based on What They Actually Use
The commercial model is aimed at making AI easier to adopt. Organizations can use the platform on a consumption basis instead of building expensive infrastructure upfront. That matters for smaller companies with limited technology budgets. An SME can start with one AI project and expand later. It doesn’t need a large GPU deployment sitting in-house from day one.
Local Hosting Is the Bigger Part of the Story
The word sovereign matters here. DeepAstra’s service is hosted locally in Oman. That gives organizations more control over where sensitive information is processed. It can also help with governance and regulatory requirements. For banks, government agencies, healthcare organizations, and other regulated sectors, that isn’t a minor detail. Data location can determine whether an AI project is practical at all.
Open-Source Models Give Organizations More Control
The platform provides access to open-source AI models rather than forcing users into one closed ecosystem. Organizations can manage access, permissions, and model usage within a controlled environment. DeepAstra says its broader platform is model-agnostic. It can also support proprietary models and private deployments. That gives customers more flexibility as their AI requirements change.
Otech Handles Local Access While DeepAstra Provides the Technology
The two companies have fairly distinct jobs in the partnership. Otech will make the service available locally and support adoption among Omani institutions. DeepAstra provides the underlying AI technology. That includes the unified interface and model management capabilities. The arrangement combines Otech’s local infrastructure position with DeepAstra’s sovereign AI platform.
Otech Is Building a Bigger Role in Oman’s AI Infrastructure
Otech itself is relatively new. Omantel launched the technology subsidiary in February 2026. The company is positioning itself around cloud, AI, IoT, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure. It also operates AI data centers and works with government and enterprise customers. The DeepAstra partnership pushes that strategy further into AI deployment.
DeepAstra Is Moving From Startup to Commercial Deployment
For DeepAstra, the launch marks an important commercial step. The Omani company was founded in 2025 and focuses on sovereign AI infrastructure. It is also part of NVIDIA’s Inception program. Earlier in 2026, DeepAstra secured strategic investment from the Oman Future Fund through Omantel Ventures. The new API now turns that backing into a service businesses can actually use.
Oman Has Already Been Building Its Own AI Capabilities
The launch doesn’t appear in isolation. Oman has been steadily building national AI capacity. In September 2025, the country introduced Mu’een, its first national large language model. The model was trained on local data to better reflect Omani language and culture. Its first government rollout targeted 20,000 employees. Tasks included translation, document analysis, summarization, and content generation.
Other projects include an AI Studio and a National Open Data Portal. These initiatives sit under Oman’s National Programme for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Digital Technologies. The broader goal is clear: Oman wants more AI capability operating inside its own digital ecosystem.
Sovereign AI Could Give Omani SMEs a Faster Route to Production
Large enterprises can afford dedicated AI teams, private infrastructure, and complex integrations. Smaller businesses usually can’t. That’s where this platform becomes more interesting.
An Omani startup could experiment with several models without buying its own computing infrastructure. An SME could begin with a narrow automation project. A larger organization could test models while keeping sensitive information within a controlled environment. The same platform can serve very different users.
That could shorten the awkward gap between experimenting with AI and actually deploying it.
Oman Is Treating AI Sovereignty as Infrastructure, Not a Buzzword
Sovereign AI is becoming a bigger theme across the Gulf. Governments want advanced models, but they also want control over data and infrastructure.
Oman’s approach is starting to take a recognizable shape. National models create local AI capabilities. Domestic data infrastructure keeps information closer to home. Platforms such as DeepAstra can then give businesses easier access to those capabilities.
The Otech and DeepAstra launch fills an important piece of that stack. It isn’t about producing another headline-grabbing chatbot. It’s about giving companies a practical way to build AI products without immediately turning to foreign public cloud services.
For Oman’s AI ambitions, that plumbing may matter more than it sounds.
